December 30: A Declaration of Allegiance
Scripture
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[e] 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
-Romans 10:9-13
In Romans 10, Paul speaks with beautiful simplicity about salvation. He makes it clear that God’s saving grace is not limited by background, ethnicity, or religious history. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile. The same Lord is Lord of all, and He richly blesses everyone who calls on Him. Salvation is not reserved for the religious elite or those with perfect understanding. It is offered freely to all who turn to Jesus in faith.
Paul also explains how this salvation is received. “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” This is not a formula or a set of magic words. It is a response of faith. Belief in the heart speaks of trust, a deep confidence in what God has done through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Confession with the mouth flows naturally from that belief, giving voice to what the heart has already embraced.
To declare that Jesus is Lord is more than acknowledging a historical figure or agreeing with a doctrine. It is a declaration of allegiance. Jesus is not only the One who died and rose again, He is the living Lord, the reigning King. This confession is an act of surrender, a turning of our lives toward His leadership and authority. We are not just believing facts about Jesus, we are entrusting ourselves to Him.
And the promise attached to this faith is amazing. Those who believe are justified, forgiven, and declared not guilty before God. Shame is removed, hope is restored, and new life is given. Paul reminds us that God does not withhold His goodness, He richly blesses all who call on Him. Salvation is not earned, it is received. And it is always met with grace, mercy, and the gift of a life made new.
Reflection
In what area of your life might Jesus be inviting you to move from agreement to surrender as you confess Him as Lord?
Where might God be inviting you to move from simply believing facts about Jesus to fully trusting Him with your heart and direction?
How does knowing that God richly blesses all who call on Him bring freedom, hope, or reassurance to your faith today?
Prayer
Thank God for making salvation available to everyone through Jesus. Ask Him to deepen your trust, not just in what Christ has done, but in who Christ is as Lord. Invite the Spirit to help you live each day in joyful surrender, confident that you are forgiven, accepted, and richly blessed as you follow Him.
