September 13: A Different Response
Scripture
“Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.”
—1 Peter 3:8–9 (NLT)
Peter’s words go straight to the heart of what it means to belong to the family of God. “Be of one mind,” he writes. But he’s not calling us to some kind of bland conformity or a loss of individuality. The unity he’s describing is deeper. It’s about centering our lives on the things that matter most, namely Christ and His Kingdom.
Our common focus is Jesus. To be of one mind means we love as He loved, we carry compassion for those who are hurting, and we keep a humble and tender spirit. It means we live the way He lived, even when it costs us something. When Jesus was insulted, He didn’t fire back. When He was mocked and reviled, He chose forgiveness. That’s the kind of life Peter is urging us toward.
Of course, this doesn’t come naturally. Everything in us wants to defend ourselves, retaliate, or hold a grudge. But Peter reminds us that this is our calling as disciples. We are to bless when insulted, forgive when wronged, and love when it is anything but easy. The good news is that God doesn’t leave us to figure this out on our own. His Spirit gives us strength to walk in this way, and the community of faith encourages us to keep moving forward together.
When we live in this way, united in Christ and marked by humility, compassion, and forgiveness, the world around us sees a reflection of Jesus. This kind of life speaks louder than words and draws others toward Him. Peter reminds us that choosing this path not only honors Christ but also opens the door to the blessing God has promised.
Reflection
1. What does it mean for you personally to be “of one mind” with other believers in Christ?
2. How have you experienced the Spirit helping you respond with humility or forgiveness in a difficult situation?
3. In what practical way can you bless someone who has hurt or wronged you?
Prayer
Ask the Lord to fix your focus on Jesus so that unity, humility, and compassion flow naturally from your life. Pray for strength to forgive and bless those who wrong you, and for your witness to point others to Christ.
