A Great Reward

Scripture
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
—Matthew 5:10–12 (NIV)

The persecution we experience for our faith in the United States is nothing compared to what many of our brothers and sisters face around the world. In places like Nigeria and India, following Jesus can cost believers their homes, families, and even their lives. Jesus says that those who suffer for righteousness are blessed. They may endure crushing difficulty now, but the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them. The world may strip away much, but it cannot take away what God has promised.

Although our suffering may not take the same form, Jesus’ words still speak to us. As His followers living in a broken world, we may face insults, rejection, misrepresentation, or pressure to compromise our convictions. When we stand for what is right, we may find ourselves on the receiving end of ridicule. Yet Jesus tells us to rejoice and be glad. That sounds strange until we remember what He is pointing us toward.

“Suffering, then, is the badge of true discipleship. The disciple is not above his master.”¹
— Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Jesus says that a great reward awaits those who endure hardship for His sake. He is not telling us to enjoy suffering but to see beyond it. The Kingdom that is coming will far outweigh the pain of the present moment. If they opposed the Master, His followers should expect the same. Just as the prophets were mistreated for speaking truth, we should not be surprised when we experience opposition for following Christ. These moments anchor us in the reality that our hope is not in this world but in the Kingdom that is yet to come.

So when you face hostility for choosing righteousness, take heart. You are not alone. You are walking a path well worn by the faithful. And the King Himself promises that every faithful step is seen, remembered, and rewarded. Keep your eyes on the Kingdom that awaits, and do not let temporary troubles steal your joy.

Reflection

  1. How do Jesus’ words reshape the way you view opposition or criticism for your faith?
  2. What situations in your life right now might require courage to stand for righteousness?
  3. How can remembering the coming Kingdom help you endure present challenges with joy?

Prayer
Ask God to give you courage to stand firm when you face opposition for your faith. Pray for believers around the world who suffer greatly for Christ. Ask Him to fill your heart with hope in the Kingdom that is coming and joy in knowing that He sees every step of faithfulness.
