March 5: A Heart At Peace

Scripture
It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy. 22 Do not those who plot evil go astray? But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness… 30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. 31 Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
– Proverbs 14:21-21, 30-31 NIV

These verses make something very clear: how we treat people says a lot about what we really believe about God. “It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor… whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” This is pretty straightforward. It means our faith is not just about what we confess with our mouth, but how we respond to the people right in front of us. Especially those who are overlooked or struggling. To treat someone with contempt is not a small thing, because every human being bears the image of God.

Then Solomon gets us to look inward. “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” That image is startling. Envy doesn’t just pass through us; it eats away at us. It keeps us measuring ourselves against others, replaying what we don’t have, growing quietly dissatisfied. But when our hearts are settled in the Lord, something changes. We don’t have to compete. We don’t have to compare. Peace steadies us and frees us to love well.

There’s also a contrast between those who “plot evil” and those who “plan what is good.” That’s intentional language. It’s not only about avoiding obvious sin. It’s about direction. What are we setting our minds on? What are we moving toward? Those who deliberately pursue what is good discover something beautiful: love and faithfulness begin to mark their lives.

So let’s take inventory of our hearts today. Is there any hardness that needs softening? Any envy that needs surrendering? Ask the Lord to anchor you in His peace. And then do something tangible. Extend kindness. Move toward someone in need. When you do, you are not simply doing a good deed. You are honoring the God who created them. And that kind of life carries a lasting blessing.

Reflection
1. Is there anyone in your life right now you’ve been tempted to overlook, dismiss, or quietly resent?

2. Where might envy or comparison be stealing your peace?

3. What intentional step could you take this week to plan what is good and show kindness to someone in need?

Prayer
Ask the Lord to search your heart and expose any envy, hardness, or indifference. Invite Him to anchor you in His peace so that comparison loses its grip. Pray for eyes to see the needs around you and for a willing heart to honor God through simple, tangible acts of kindness.
