A Stronghold in Times of Trouble

Scripture
He rules the world in righteousness
and judges the peoples with equity.
The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.
Sing the praises of the LORD, enthroned in Zion;
proclaim among the nations what he has done.

—Psalm 9:8–11 (NIV)

You’ve probably felt it: the ache of watching wrong go unpunished, of wondering if anyone in power actually cares. David felt it too, and he didn’t pretend otherwise. But he anchored himself in something the world couldn’t offer: a King whose judgment is perfectly fair, every time, for everyone.

That’s not a small comfort. It’s the whole point. “The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” In David’s day, a stronghold was a fortress carved into a mountain, the place you ran when everything else had failed. That’s still what God is. Not a distant ruler who tolerates injustice, but One who actively steps into it on your behalf.

“He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The LORD frees the prisoners. The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are weighed down.”
Psalm 146:7–9 (NLT)

This is who you’re trusting when you trust His name, not a bystander, but a God who moves. “Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.” That trust isn’t naive. It’s built on a track record you can actually see. So when injustice presses in, whether it’s aimed at you or someone you love, don’t just wait it out. Run to Him. He’s not just a place to hide. He’s the One who acts.

Reflection

  1. How does God’s justice comfort you in a world that feels so unjust?
  2. Where do you most often turn first for refuge when life is hard, and how can you run to God instead?
  3. What story of God’s faithfulness can you share with someone this week to “proclaim what He has done”?

Prayer
Thank God for being your stronghold and refuge. Ask Him to deepen your trust in His justice and faithfulness and to give you courage to proclaim His goodness to others.
