February 19: A Tree Of Life
Scripture
“A gentle answer deflects anger,
but harsh words make tempers flare.
The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing,
but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness.
The Lord is watching everywhere,
keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.
Gentle words are a tree of life;
a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”
Proverbs 15:1–4 (NLT)
Our words carry weight. They can calm a storm or create one. A gentle answer has the power to deflect anger, while harsh words can pour gasoline on an already burning fire. Most of us have experienced both. We know how quickly a careless phrase can escalate a situation, and how a measured, gracious response can bring peace.
Solomon tells us that wise speech makes knowledge appealing. There is something attractive about a person who thinks before speaking, who chooses words carefully, who reflects the heart of God in tone as well as content. On the other hand, foolish words expose what is happening beneath the surface. Speech is never neutral. It reveals the condition of the heart.
Then comes the sobering reminder: the Lord is watching everywhere. Not in a harsh, suspicious way, but in a holy and attentive way. Our conversations in private are just as visible to Him as our public words. Our goal is not merely to win arguments or defend ourselves. It is to please the Lord in both our actions and our speech.
Gentle words are called “a tree of life.” That is Kingdom language. Our speech can nourish, restore, and strengthen others. Or it can crush a spirit through deceit, sarcasm, or cruelty. Each day, in small moments, we decide what kind of tree we will be. May our words reflect the life of Christ and bring life to those around us.
Reflection
1. In moments of conflict, do your words tend to deflect anger or intensify it?
2. What do your everyday conversations reveal about the condition of your heart?
3. Who in your life needs a life-giving word from you today?
Prayer
Ask the Lord to guard your tongue and shape your speech with wisdom and gentleness. Confess any patterns of harshness, sarcasm, or deceit, and invite Him to transform your heart so that your words reflect His character. Pray that your speech would become a tree of life, bringing encouragement, peace, and strength to those around you.
