January 23: Affirmation Or Transformation?

Scripture
Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. 3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths. 5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.
– 2 Timothy 4:2-5 NLT

In this passage, Paul gives Timothy, a young pastor, some clear and sobering instruction. Timothy is called to preach the Word, to be ready whether the moment feels convenient or not. Truth is not dependent on circumstances or popular opinion. God’s Word is the foundation of Timothy’s ministry, and it is to be proclaimed faithfully, patiently, and with care. Correction, rebuke, and encouragement all have their place when they are rooted in sound teaching and love for God’s people.

Paul then issues a warning that feels remarkably relevant. A time is coming, he says, when people will no longer listen to sound teaching. Instead, they will seek out voices that tell them what they want to hear. Rather than allowing truth to shape their thinking, they will look for teaching that confirms their desires, opinions, and assumptions. Truth becomes uncomfortable, and myths become more appealing. This isn’t just a pastoral problem, it’s a human one. We all feel the temptation to prefer affirmation over transformation.

Because of this, Paul urges Timothy to keep a clear mind and to stay focused. Faithfulness to truth may bring resistance, misunderstanding, or even suffering. Timothy is not promised ease, but he is given a calling. He is to do the work of sharing the good news and to fully carry out the ministry entrusted to him, trusting God with the outcome. Obedience and fruit, not popularity and praise, are the measures of success in God’s Kingdom.

Paul’s words invite us to examine our own hearts as well. Are we people who truly want to hear the truth, even when it challenges us and calls us to change? Or are we more comfortable with teaching that simply reinforces what we already believe? God’s truth is not given to wound us, but to free us. May we be people who seek it, submit to it, and share it with humility and courage, remembering that it is the truth that sets us, and others, free.

Reflection
1. How do you typically respond when God’s Word challenges your assumptions, habits, or desires?

2. Are there voices or teachings you are tempted to prefer because they are more comfortable rather than more truthful?

3. In what ways might God be calling you to remain faithful to truth, even when doing so feels costly or unpopular?

Prayer
Thank God for the gift of His Word and for the truth that leads to freedom and life. Ask Him for a teachable heart that is willing to listen, repent, and grow when His truth confronts you. Pray for courage and clarity to live out and share the good news with faithfulness, trusting your life and calling into the hands of the Lord who strengthens and sustains you.
