An Unshakeable Confidence

Scripture

I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety.

—Psalm 16:7–9 (NLT)

David expresses a deep confidence in the Lord’s presence and protection here, a confidence that changes everything. Imagine, just for a moment, how different our lives would be if we truly believed these words to be true, deep down in our souls. David begins by praising the Lord who guides him, recognizing that God is actively leading him. Their relationship is so close that he says, “even at night my heart instructs me.” As David quiets his soul before the Lord, God’s counsel becomes his own inner compass.

This leads to his powerful declaration: “I know the Lord is always with me.” This isn’t a vague hope, it’s a settled conviction. It reminds us of Psalm 139, where David says of God, “You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.” To be a child of God is to be hemmed in by His presence, fully surrounded and secure. That’s why David can say with such certainty, “I will not be shaken.” Fear loses its grip when you know the Lord is right beside you.

“There is no peace like the peace of those whose minds are possessed with full assurance that they have known God, and God has known them, and that this relationship guarantees God’s favor to them in life, through death and on forever.”¹
—J.I. Packer, Knowing God

Packer names exactly what David is experiencing. This isn’t peace that depends on circumstances lining up. It’s peace rooted in being fully known and held by God, the same assurance that lets David say “I will not be shaken.” With that kind of knowledge, joy and gladness become the natural, logical response. David’s next line isn’t a surprise, it’s a conclusion: “No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.”

This isn’t a joy reserved only for spiritual giants like David, it’s available to all of us. The same God, who was always with him, is always with you. His presence is just as real, His guidance just as accessible. The peace, safety, and joy David experienced are available to every child of God. The only question is, will we believe it and live like it’s true?

Reflection

  1. How would your perspective on a current challenge change if you fully embraced the truth that the Lord is always right beside you?
  2. What would it look like to bless the Lord and intentionally seek His guidance throughout your day, even in the quiet moments?
  3. In what area of your life do you most need to be reminded that because God is with you, you “will not be shaken”?

Prayer

Thank God for His faithful and constant presence in your life. Ask Him to help you live with the kind of confidence and joy that comes from knowing He is always by your side. Pray for a deeper awareness of His nearness today.
