Better Than Life Itself

Scripture
O God, you are my God;
I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for you;
my whole body longs for you
in this parched and weary land
where there is no water.
I have seen you in your sanctuary
and gazed upon your power and glory.
Your unfailing love is better than life itself;
how I praise you!
I will praise you as long as I live,
lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
You satisfy me more than the richest feast.
I will praise you with songs of joy.
Psalm 63:1–5 (NLT)

David wrote this psalm while he was in the wilderness, physically isolated and spiritually desperate. Cut off from comfort and community, he turns his heart toward God with raw honesty and hunger: “My soul thirsts for you.” Anyone who has ever felt parched in spirit knows the weight of those words. Just as the body craves water in the heat of the desert, the soul aches for the presence of God.

David remembers what it felt like to be near the Lord. “I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory.” His memory of God’s presence becomes the wellspring of his worship. Even in the dry place, he chooses praise. He lifts his hands in prayer and declares that God’s love is better than life itself.

“Every time you listen with great attentiveness to the voice that calls you the Beloved, you will discover within yourself a desire to hear that voice longer and more deeply. It is like discovering a well in the desert. Once you have touched wet ground, you want to dig deeper.”
— Henri Nouwen¹

That’s the great paradox of the wilderness. It can become a sanctuary when you seek God in it. David discovers that the Lord’s presence is not dependent on circumstance but on pursuit. Though he is weary and thirsty, he finds joy because his satisfaction is not found in food, comfort, or escape, but in God Himself.

When you walk through barren seasons, it is tempting to fill the emptiness with lesser things. Yet those things never satisfy for long. Only God can refresh the soul. So the next time you feel that dryness creep in, don’t reach for a substitute. Reach for Him instead, and let this dry season become the place where you dig deeper.

Reflection

  1. When have you felt spiritually dry or distant from God? How did you respond in that season?
  2. What would change in your outlook if you truly believed that God’s love is better than life itself?
  3. What step can you take today to seek God more earnestly and let Him satisfy your soul?

Prayer
Ask God to deepen your thirst for His presence and to help you find satisfaction in Him alone. Pray for a renewed hunger that leads to worship even in the dry seasons of life.
