February 13: Beyond The Surface

Scripture
“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”
1 Samuel 16:7 (NLT)

Samuel was sent on a clear mission. He was to go to Jesse’s household and anoint the one the Lord had chosen to be the next king of Israel. When he arrived and saw Eliab, Jesse’s oldest son, he thought to himself, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed.” He looked the part. Tall. Strong. Impressive. In Samuel’s mind, he fit the mold of a king.

But God gently corrected him. “The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them.” That sentence alone should humble us. We are so often drawn to the outward: appearance, charisma, talent, influence, résumé, platform. We are quick to size people up and make conclusions. Yet God looks first and foremost at the heart. What is happening beneath the surface matters far more to Him than what is on display.
David, the youngest son, was not even invited to the initial lineup. He was out in the fields tending sheep. Overlooked. Unassuming. But while others saw a shepherd boy, God saw a heart after His own. This passage reminds us that what is inside a person is infinitely more important than what is outside. Character outweighs image. Integrity outweighs impressiveness. In the Kingdom of God, hidden faithfulness often carries more weight than visible success.

So how do we judge people? And how would we want to be judged? Most of us would prefer to be known for who we truly are, not simply how we appear. Ask the Lord to give you His eyes. Pray for a heart that resists quick assumptions and shallow evaluations. Remember God’s heart for all people and the immeasurable value each person carries in His Kingdom. The same God who looked at David’s heart is looking at yours today.

Reflection
1. Do you tend to form quick judgments about others based on appearance, personality, or status?

2. What qualities of the heart do you believe matter most to God, and are those qualities growing in you?

3. Is there someone you may need to see differently, asking God to help you value them as He does?

Prayer
Ask God to purify your own heart and to shape it into one that reflects His character. Invite Him to give you eyes to see beyond outward appearance and to love people according to their true worth in His Kingdom. Pray for humility, discernment, and compassion in the way you view others and yourself.
