December 21: Built to Last

Scripture
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”
– Matthew 7:24–27

Jesus closes the Sermon on the Mount with a simple but sobering picture. He introduces us to two people who build a house. Both hear His words and both experience storms. The difference is not what they know, or even what they believe, but what they do with what they have heard. One listens and follows. The other listens and moves on. According to Jesus, wisdom is not found in hearing His teaching alone, but in shaping our lives around it.

This is not a passage about how to be saved. Jesus is not saying that obedience earns God’s love. He is describing what life is like in a broken world and how to live in a way that can withstand it. Storms will come. It is not a question of if, but when. Pressure, disappointment, loss, temptation, and suffering are part of life for everyone. What matters is whether our lives are built on something strong enough to hold us when those storms arrive.
The foundation Jesus speaks of is not information, but relationship. It is listening to Him and actually ordering our lives around His words. Obedience is not about perfection, it is about direction. It is choosing, day by day, to trust Jesus enough to do what He says, even when it is difficult or costly. When we live this way, we are building on a foundation that cannot be shaken.

Jesus warns that hearing His words without following them is like building on sand. It may look fine for a while. It may even feel stable. But when the storms of life come, that foundation cannot hold. Jesus is inviting us into a wiser way of life, one that can endure when the storms come. May we be people who do not simply admire His teaching, but joyfully follow Him, building our lives on the solid rock that will never fail.

Reflection
1. Where in your life are you currently hearing Jesus’ words but struggling to put them into practice?

2. What storms have revealed the strength, or weakness, of the foundation you are building on?

3. What would it look like this week to take one small step of obedience in response to what Jesus has already shown you?

Prayer
Thank God for helping your life to be stable, rooted, and able to endure whatever comes. Ask for a willing and humble heart that listens to Jesus and follows Him, not out of obligation, but trust. Pray for the grace to build your life on the solid foundation of Christ, choosing joyful obedience one step at a time.
