January 31: Choose Peace

Scripture
“Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.”
– 2 Corinthians 13:11 NIV

Paul’s closing words to the Corinthians are both tender and challenging. After correcting, confronting, and warning them throughout the letter, he ends not with condemnation but with hope: “Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice.” That alone is striking. Paul knows their struggles, their divisions, their immaturity, and yet he still calls them to joy. Not because life is easy, but because God has been faithful. Rejoicing, for the Christian, is rooted not in circumstances but in redemption. In Christ, their sins are forgiven, grace has been extended, and restoration is always possible.

Paul then urges them to “strive for full restoration.” This is more than simply avoiding conflict or keeping the peace on the surface. It is an active call to pursue healing where things are broken. Restoration takes humility, honesty, and effort. It means refusing to settle for unresolved tension, fractured relationships, or spiritual drift. Paul is reminding them that the gospel they have received is a gospel of reconciliation, and that reconciliation should shape the way they relate to one another.

Next, Paul gives a series of simple but weighty commands: encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. This is especially timely. The world around us thrives on division, outrage, and suspicion. It is easy, even tempting, to let those patterns seep into the church. But Paul calls believers to something different. Unity does not mean uniformity, but it does mean choosing love over pride, listening over shouting, and grace over winning arguments. Encouragement, unity, and peace are not passive virtues, they are intentional practices.

Paul closes with a promise: when God’s people live this way, “the God of love and peace will be with you.” This is not a formula, but an assurance. As we rejoice in Christ, pursue restoration, encourage one another, and choose peace, we experience the nearness of God in deeper ways. The invitation is clear. In a restless and divided world, may we be a people marked by joy, reconciliation, unity, and peace, trusting that the God of love walks with us every step of the way.

Reflection
1. What does rejoicing look like in your life right now, especially in areas where things feel unresolved or difficult?

2. Is there a relationship, situation, or area of your heart where God may be inviting you to pursue fuller restoration rather than settling for distance or avoidance?

3. In what ways can you intentionally encourage others and choose unity and peace in a world that often pulls us toward division?

Prayer
Thank God for the joy and grace you have received through Christ, even in seasons of struggle. Ask Him to show you where restoration is needed and to give you the humility and courage to pursue it. Pray for a heart that encourages others, seeks unity, and lives at peace, trusting that the God of love and peace is with you and at work in you.
