Clothed in Christ

Scripture
For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.
—Galatians 3:26–29 (NLT)

Paul gives us a striking picture of what it means to belong to Jesus. He says that when we put our faith in Christ, we have “put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.” It is not just a fresh look, it is a new identity. The old life marked by guilt, shame, and division is gone. We are now clothed in the righteousness of Christ Himself, fully welcomed into His family.

This identity is not partial, conditional, or reserved for the elite. In God’s family, there are no outsiders and no second-class children. Once you belong to Christ, you fully belong. You are not a guest in God’s household, you are a son or daughter with a seat at the table. The ground is level at the foot of the cross.

“Christian brotherhood is not an ideal which we must realize; it is rather a reality created by God in Christ in which we may participate.”¹
—Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together

Paul takes this truth even further. In a world shaped by ethnic, economic, and gender divisions, he declares, “There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female.” He is not erasing our differences, but he is saying they no longer determine our value or place in the family of God. Bonhoeffer’s words remind us that this unity isn’t something we build through effort or good intentions. It is already ours because it belongs to Christ first.

And the result is amazing. Because you belong to Jesus, you are now part of the family of Abraham and an heir to all of God’s promises. That means you have access to the riches of His grace, His presence, and His eternal inheritance, not because of your background or effort, but because of your position in Christ. So live as someone who truly belongs, not striving to earn your place, but resting in the love and security you already have in Him. You are fully known, fully accepted, and already home.

Reflection

  1. What does it mean to you personally to be a child of God, fully welcomed into His family?
  2. Are there ways you have struggled to believe that your identity in Christ is secure and complete?
  3. How might seeing others as fellow heirs change the way you approach relationships this week?

Prayer

Thank God for clothing you in Christ and welcoming you into His family. Ask Him to help you live with the confidence of someone who belongs to Him. Pray for grace to see others through your shared identity in Christ and to walk in unity with them.
