Crucified with Christ

Scripture
“For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law; I stopped trying to meet all its requirements so that I might live for God. My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.”
—Galatians 2:19–21 (NLT)

The Mosaic law was never meant to fix us; it was meant to reveal what was broken. It shows us our sin and reminds us that no matter how hard we try, we fall short. That was Paul’s experience. He tried to keep the law perfectly but only found condemnation. So Paul came to a liberating conclusion: he had to stop trying to meet all the law’s requirements in his own strength so that he could truly live for God.

That is the same struggle many believers face today. We spend so much time fighting against sin and trying to be better Christians that we forget what it means to simply live for God. Like Paul, you need to die to the endless cycle of self-effort. The moment you stop striving to fix yourself and instead turn to the only One who can, you find freedom and life.

Paul reminds us that the secret to living for God is not found in performance but in divine presence. “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”

“As long as sin, death and the curse remain in us, sin damns us, death kills us and the curse curses us; but when these things are transferred to Christ, what is ours becomes his, and what is his becomes ours.”
— Martin Luther¹

That’s the great exchange. Through faith in Jesus, your old self is crucified, and the Spirit of God takes up residence within you. Your assurance is not found in how obedient you are but in His life present within you. So stop striving, stop performing, and start trusting. Let Christ live His life in you today.

Reflection

  1. What areas of your life feel driven by striving rather than trusting?
  2. How would your relationship with God change if you stopped trying to earn His approval?
  3. What does it mean for you personally that “Christ lives in me”?

Prayer
Ask God to help you rest in His grace. Thank Him that the law no longer condemns you because Christ fulfilled it for you. Pray that His Spirit would fill you afresh today, empowering you to live freely and fully for Him.
