Deep Roots, Steady Joy

Scripture
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand around with sinners,
or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

Psalm 1:1–3 (NLT)

Psalm 1 paints a picture of a happiness and joy that are not dependent on circumstances. The psalmist begins, “Oh, the joys,” or “Blessed,” describing a deep, steady happiness that comes from walking closely with God. It is not found in following the crowd or listening to the world’s advice but in being rooted in truth. What you give your attention to shapes your heart, and the counsel you follow determines the direction of your life.

Those who delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on it day and night are compared to trees planted by the riverbank. These trees are not exempt from changing seasons, but they remain healthy because their roots are constantly nourished by the river. In the same way, when your life is anchored in God’s Word and presence, you draw from a source that never runs dry.

“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in; aim at earth and you will get neither.”
— C.S. Lewis¹

True happiness cannot be achieved by chasing after happiness. It comes as a byproduct of seeking God and His Kingdom above all else. The person who delights in God’s truth bears fruit in every season, because the One who planted them is faithful.

If your joy feels fragile or fleeting, maybe it is time to check where your roots are planted. Are you drawing from the world’s shallow wells, or are you planted by the river of God’s presence and Word? So today, before you reach for something else to satisfy you, go back to the river first.

Reflection

  1. What are the primary sources of influence shaping your thoughts and attitudes?
  2. How can you become more rooted in Scripture and God’s presence each day?
  3. What step can you take this week to redirect your focus from the world’s voices to God’s truth?

Prayer
Ask God to help you delight in His Word and draw daily from His presence. Thank Him for being your unchanging source of life and joy.
