Draw Near to God

Scripture
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
—James 4:7–8 (NIV)

Anyone who has followed Jesus for any length of time knows there is a battle being fought. We cannot see it, but we certainly feel it. The struggle between good and evil is not just a story from Scripture; it is woven into our everyday lives. James urges us to resist the devil so that he will flee. But before we can stand our ground, we must first surrender.

The key to victory begins with submission. We win not by pushing harder or trying to outlast temptation, but by coming under God’s authority and power. When you submit yourself to Him, the weight of the battle no longer rests on your shoulders. God fights for you, and His strength becomes your own.

James also gives us an invitation full of promise. “Come near to God and He will come near to you.” What a beautiful picture of grace. God does not keep His distance. When you take one step toward Him, He moves toward you with open arms.

“Nothing bothers the devil more than a Christian delighting in God’s presence.”
— A.W. Tozer¹

Drawing near to God means turning from sin and turning your heart toward His presence. It is choosing closeness over compromise. The road to victory begins in surrender and continues in intimacy. The more you draw near to God, the less pull the enemy has on your heart. Today, take a moment to come close to Him. Submit your heart, resist the lies, and rest in the truth that God is already near.

Reflection

  1. What does true submission to God look like in your daily life?
  2. Have you been trying to fight spiritual battles in your own strength instead of relying on His?
  3. How can you make time today to draw near to God and enjoy His presence?

Prayer
Ask God to help you fully submit to Him and rely on His strength. Pray for wisdom to resist the enemy and for a heart that stays close to God. Thank Him for drawing near as you seek Him today.
