December 14 – Faith Is…
Scripture
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.”
Hebrews 11:1–3 (NIV)
Faith often feels hardest when life is quiet, unclear, or unresolved. When answers are slow in coming and prayers seem to hang in the air, we start to wonder what faith is really supposed to look like. Hebrews 11 reminds us that faith is not about having everything figured out. It is learning to trust God when we cannot yet see what He is doing, and choosing to believe that He is still at work even when the path ahead feels uncertain.
It’s easy to think of faith as confidence that things will turn out the way we hope. But Scripture invites us into something deeper. Faith is confidence in God, not confidence in outcomes. The people who lived by faith before us did not all experience the same results, yet they shared the same trust. Their lives were shaped by a steady reliance on the Lord, even when their circumstances were confusing, painful, or unresolved.
There are moments when we wonder if our faith is strong enough, especially when God’s ways don’t match our expectations. In those moments, faith does not demand that we pretend everything is fine. It simply asks that we keep turning toward Jesus, trusting His heart even when we don’t understand His hand. Faith grows not by having all the answers, but by staying close to the One who does.
Living by faith means learning to rest in what God has promised, even when we can only see part of the story. The same God who spoke the universe into existence is holding your life together right now. You may not see how everything fits, but faith allows you to keep walking, trusting that God is faithful, present, and good. Step by step, He invites us to live with hope anchored not in what is visible, but in Him.
Reflection
1. Where in your life are you struggling to trust God because the outcome is unclear or unresolved?
2. What would it look like for your faith to rest more in who Jesus is than in what you hope He will do?
3. How might God be inviting you to take a small step of trust today, even without all the answers?
Prayer
Take a moment to bring your uncertainties honestly before the Lord. Ask Him to help you trust His heart when you cannot see His plan. Invite Jesus to strengthen your faith, not by changing your circumstances, but by drawing you closer to Himself.
