February 17: Fruit Reveals The Root
Scripture
“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.”
– Luke 6:43–45 (NLT)
Jesus begins with something obvious. Trees produce according to their nature. Orange trees do not struggle to produce oranges. Apple trees do not wake up one day and decide to bear figs. Fruit reveals the root.
Then He turns the image toward us. Our lives bear fruit, and that fruit tells the truth about what is happening beneath the surface. Our actions, our reactions, our attitudes, and especially our words are not random. They flow from the treasury of the heart. What spills out of our mouths has first taken up residence inside us.
Jesus is not giving us this teaching so we can become fruit inspectors of everyone else. He is inviting us into honest self-examination. Not everyone is who they claim to be, and that includes us. It is possible to look healthy on the outside while something unhealthy grows within. The Kingdom life begins in the heart, and whatever fills the heart will eventually overflow.
So what kind of fruit is your life producing? What does your speech reveal about the true condition of your heart? This may be a good time for a personal fruit inspection. And the good news is this: if what you find is not what you hoped for, the Gardener has not given up on you. He can uproot what is unhealthy, plant what is new, and cultivate in you the kind of heart that produces lasting, beautiful fruit.
Reflection
1. When you listen to your own words this week, what do they reveal about what is stored in your heart?
2. Are there patterns in your reactions or attitudes that point to something deeper God may want to address?
3. What would it look like to intentionally fill the “treasury” of your heart with truth, gratitude, and the presence of Jesus?
Prayer
Ask God to search your heart and reveal what may be hidden beneath the surface. Confess any bitterness, pride, or impurity that has taken root, and invite Him to replace it with love, humility, and truth. Thank Him that He is a patient Gardener who delights in cultivating good fruit in your life as you abide in Him.
