September 18: Grieving or Glorifying?

Scripture
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:29–32 (NLT)

It’s amazing to think that our lives can grieve the Holy Spirit. Paul’s warning reminds us that following Jesus involves not only what we believe, it’s also about how we live. Our words, attitudes, and actions matter. When we cling to bitterness or unleash harsh words, it doesn’t just hurt others—it brings sorrow to the very Spirit who dwells in us.

But Paul doesn’t leave us with a list of what not to do. He calls us into a new way of life: encouragement, kindness, tenderness, and forgiveness. These aren’t qualities we can manufacture on our own. They flow from a heart that is being reshaped by the Spirit. Transformation comes as we yield to His work, letting go of anger and choosing the way of love.

When we surrender our anger, rage, or resentment to Jesus, something beautiful happens. The bitterness that once poisoned us gives way to forgiveness. The harshness in our speech softens into encouragement. Kindness takes the place of self-protection. Why? Because we remember the immeasurable kindness and forgiveness we have received through Christ.

This is what it means to live as citizens of the Kingdom. We should let the Spirit reshape our hearts so that our lives reflect Jesus in our everyday lives. This is manifest through words that build up, actions that heal and forgiveness that mirrors the cross.

May our lives bring joy, not sorrow, to the Spirit who has guaranteed our salvation on the day of redemption.

Reflection
1. What impact do your words have on others, do they build up or tear down?

2. Is there any bitterness or anger the Spirit might be inviting you to surrender today?

3. How can remembering Christ’s forgiveness empower you to extend forgiveness to someone else?

Prayer
Thank God for His Spirit who marks you as His own. Ask Him to help you speak words that build up rather than tear down. Pray for grace to release bitterness and reflect Christ’s forgiveness in your daily life.
