October 3: Guided by the Spirit
Scripture
“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.”
—Galatians 5:16–18 (NLT)
What is guiding your life today? What guided you yesterday? Paul tells us there are two competing forces at work within us: the sinful nature and the Spirit. One pulls us toward disobedience and selfishness, while the other draws us into the life God intends, one that is in step with His Spirit. And Paul doesn’t sugarcoat it; these forces are constantly at war.
If you’ve ever felt the tension of temptation pulling one way while the Spirit nudges you in another, you know exactly what Paul is describing. That inner battle is real. But notice the hope he offers. When we are directed by the Spirit, we are no longer bound by the weight of the law. The Spirit doesn’t just restrain us from sin; He gives us new desires that lead us into freedom, joy, and obedience.
Paul reminds us of this truth elsewhere, “Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” (Galatians 6:8). The question, then, is simple: what are we feeding more, the flesh or the Spirit? We feed the Spirit by choosing prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience in the everyday moments of life, trusting that each small step draws us deeper into His leading.
When we choose to walk by the Spirit, we’re not left to fight the battle alone. God Himself is at work in us, reshaping our desires and giving us the strength to say yes to Him. Each day is a fresh opportunity to sow to the Spirit and experience the life and peace that He brings. Don’t miss the chance today to feed the Spirit’s work in you and walk in the freedom only He can give.
Reflection
1. In what area of your life do you feel the tug-of-war between your sinful nature and the Spirit?
2. What practical step can you take today to “sow to the Spirit” rather than to the flesh?
3. How does the promise of freedom in Christ encourage you to rely more fully on the Spirit’s guidance?
Prayer
Ask God to make you sensitive to the Spirit’s leading today. Pray for strength to resist the pull of the sinful nature and for a heart that desires what pleases Him. Thank Him for the freedom and grace that come through His Spirit.
