January 6: He Cares

Scripture
And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
-1 Peter 5:5b-7

Faith and humility are inseparable in the Christian life. In this passage, Peter reminds us that the God we serve is both mighty and tender. He is the One who rules over all things, and yet He is also the God who personally cares for us. That combination is meant to shape how we live. When we truly understand who God is, our natural response is humility, not fear or self-reliance, but a quiet confidence rooted in trust.

Peter tells us to clothe ourselves with humility in our relationships with one another. Humility is not weakness or insecurity. It is the honest recognition that we are not in control and that we were never meant to be. God opposes pride because pride places us at the center, while humility places God there. When we walk humbly, we open ourselves to grace. When we cling to pride, we resist the very help we need.

What’s striking is how closely Peter connects humility with trust. To humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand is not to shrink back, but to rest in His care. The same God who has all power also carries deep concern for our hearts. That is why Peter immediately tells us to cast our worries and anxieties on Him. Humility acknowledges that we are not strong enough to carry everything on our own, and trust dares to place those burdens in God’s hands.

When we walk in humility, we do not walk in fear. We walk with assurance. God promises to lift up the humble in His time, and He meets them with grace along the way.
Knowing that He cares for us frees us from constant worry and striving. Instead of carrying what was never meant to be ours alone, we are invited to place it back into His hands. Today, humility may look like simply trusting God enough to let go and believing that His care is more than sufficient.

Reflection
1. In what areas of your life do you feel most tempted to rely on your own strength rather than humbly trusting God?

2. How does remembering God’s tender care for you change the way you think about your worries and anxieties?

3. What would it look like for you to practice humility today, both in your relationship with God and with others?

Prayer
Thank God for both His mighty power and His personal care for your life. Ask Him to help you walk in humility, trusting His control rather than resisting it through pride or self-reliance. Invite Him to carry the worries and burdens you have been holding onto, and rest in the grace He promises to give.
