February 28: Hold On Loosely

Scripture
All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33 The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. 34 There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them 35 and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.
– Acts 4:32-34

When we read Acts 4, many people fixate on the fact that the early believers shared everything they had. It can almost sound like a spiritual commune. But Luke begins somewhere deeper, he says “All the believers were united in heart and mind.” Their generosity flowed from unity. And their unity flowed from a shared devotion to the risen Christ.

These were not people who were coerced, they were transformed. Their identity was no longer anchored in what they owned but in the risen Christ. They understood that everything in their hands had first come from God’s hand. And when you truly believe that, you stop clinging and start stewarding. You stop hoarding and start sharing.

The apostles kept testifying to the resurrection of Jesus. That is crucial. Their generosity was not rooted in guilt, pressure, or ideology. It was rooted in resurrection. When you truly believe Christ is alive and reigning, money, land, and status lose their grip. As John Chrysostom said, “The rich exist for the sake of the poor, and the poor exist for the salvation of the rich.”¹ Stewardship in the Kingdom is never just about resources. It is about transformation.

God’s grace was powerfully at work among them, and there were no needy persons among them. What a testimony. This passage calls us to examine our own hearts. Are we united around the risen Jesus? Do we see what we have as gifts to steward for His purposes? We are blessed to be a blessing. So today, live open-handed. Remember the resurrection and let your generosity and unity point others to the living Christ.

Reflection
1. Is there anything you are holding onto as if it truly belongs to you rather than as something entrusted to you by God?

2. How does remembering the resurrection of Jesus reshape the way you view money, possessions, and status?

3. What is one practical way you could live more open-handed this week for the good of someone else?

Prayer
Ask the Lord to unite your heart more deeply around Christ and His Kingdom. Thank Him for the gifts and resources He has entrusted to you. Pray for a generous, resurrection-shaped life that reflects His grace and becomes a blessing to others.
