January 22: In His Time
Scripture
I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. 11 Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.
-Ecclesiastes 3:10-11
These verses come on the heels of Solomon’s well-known words, “There is a time for everything.” A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. Life unfolds in seasons, and Solomon acknowledges that some of those seasons feel heavy. There is a real burden to being human. And yet, he makes a remarkable declaration: God has made everything beautiful for its own time. Nothing is wasted. No season is meaningless. Every moment fits within God’s greater purpose, even when we can’t see how.
Solomon goes on to say that God has placed eternity in the human heart. That simple phrase explains so much about our restlessness. We sense there is more to life than what we can touch, achieve, or accumulate. Even when things are going well, something in us longs for more. We were made with an awareness of eternity, yet we are limited in our ability to see the full scope of what God is doing. We live somewhere between longing and trust, knowing there is meaning, even when we don’t fully understand it.
That longing is not accidental. It is a clue pointing us toward God Himself. Every human heart carries a desire that this world can never fully satisfy, a hunger for something lasting, something eternal. In many ways, we are all longing for Eden, for the kind of unbroken fellowship with God that humanity once knew. Whether people realize it or not, every search for meaning, purpose, or fulfillment is ultimately a search for the Lord.
The good news is that God has not left us to search blindly. He has made a way for us to know Him through Jesus. The One who placed eternity in our hearts has also stepped into time to redeem us. And for those of us who know Him, we are called to walk alongside other sojourners, pointing them toward the hope we have found. Life may carry its burdens, but it is also filled with beauty, purpose, and the promise that God is at work, making all things beautiful in His time.
Reflection
1. Where do you most feel the weight or burden of this season of life, and how might God be at work in it, even if you can’t fully see it yet?
2. In what ways do you sense the longing for eternity in your own heart, and how have you tried to satisfy that longing?
3. How might God be inviting you to point others toward Him as they search for meaning and hope?
Prayer
Thank God for being present in every season of your life, even the ones that feel heavy or unclear. Bring your longings, questions, and burdens honestly before Him, trusting that He is making all things beautiful in His time. Ask Him to deepen your awareness of eternity, to satisfy your heart with His presence, and to use your life to gently point others toward the hope and meaning found in Him.
