October 17: Keep Me From Sin

Scripture
“Keep your servant from deliberate sins!
Don’t let them control me.
Then I will be free of guilt
and innocent of great sin.
May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
Psalm 19:13–14 (NLT)

Here we find another prayer of David that helps us draw close to the Lord. This is a preemptive prayer, asking God to keep him from deliberate sin. Like all of us, David is a sinner and he knows how sin damages his relationship with God. So he asks the Lord to “keep him from deliberate sin.”

While this is a sincere and humble prayer, it also reminds us of our part in resisting temptation. The Holy Spirit makes us sensitive to sin and gives us the power to resist it, but we must still choose to turn away from temptation and turn toward God. As James writes, “Draw near to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” We must first draw near. That is what David is doing here, asking for divine help so that his heart stays inclined toward obedience.

David also recognizes the power of his thoughts and words. “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You.” What we meditate on shapes who we become. It reminds us of Psalm 119:11, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” David desires to walk in righteousness and knows he cannot do it alone. So he cries out to the Lord for help, trusting that God’s grace is stronger than his weakness.

This is a prayer worth making our own each day. “Lord, keep me from deliberate sin. Guard my heart and guide my thoughts.” When we begin our day this way, we invite the Spirit to lead us, purify us, and strengthen our desire to live in a way that honors God. Every step of obedience, no matter how small, draws us closer to Him. And when we stumble, we remember that the Lord is our rock, the One who keeps our footing secure, and our redeemer, the One who lifts us when we fall and restores our soul.

So today, stand firm on His strength, trust His mercy, and choose to walk in the freedom that only He can give.

Reflection
1/ What does this passage reveal about the seriousness of deliberate sin?

2. How can you make David’s prayer your own in daily moments of temptation?

3. What practical steps can help you “hide God’s Word in your heart” this week?

Prayer
Ask God to guard your heart from deliberate sin today. Pray that the words you speak and the thoughts you dwell on would honor Him. Thank Him for His grace that not only forgives but also empowers you to walk in holiness, and for being both your rock and your redeemer.
