November 14: Let It Grow

Scripture
“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”
—James 1:2–5 (NLT)

Nobody enjoys suffering or difficult seasons. But even Jesus and the apostles experienced sorrow and pain. Yet they understood that trials have a purpose in the life of every believer. James tells us that when troubles come, we should see them as opportunities for joy. That does not mean pretending hardship feels good. It means trusting that God is using what we face to shape us into people who reflect His character.

Our perspective makes all the difference. If we see suffering as punishment, joy is nearly impossible. But if we see it through the lens of God’s Kingdom, we begin to recognize the opportunity within it. Every challenge is a place where faith can grow stronger. Endurance is not built in comfort but in perseverance. Life in Christ is not a sprint; it is a marathon that requires focus, discipline, and steady steps of faith. So James says, “Let it grow.” Do not resist what God is developing in you through the strain of the race. The testing of your faith is training your endurance, preparing you to run with greater strength and purpose.

As endurance grows, something beautiful happens. The things of this world lose their grip, and our hearts long more for the world that is to come. We begin to see that every difficulty can draw us closer to the reality of God’s Kingdom, both now and forever. The more our eyes are fixed on Him, the more joy takes root, even in suffering.

And if we lack wisdom along the way, James reminds us that God is generous to give it. He never shames us for asking. In fact, He delights in guiding His children. So when you find yourself in the middle of the race, do not just ask for relief. Ask for wisdom, endurance, and a deeper awareness of God’s presence. These are the things that will keep your heart steady and your eyes fixed on the finish line, where true joy awaits.

Reflection
1. How might your perspective on suffering change if you viewed it as an opportunity for growth rather than punishment?

2. What challenges in your life right now might God be using to strengthen your endurance for the race ahead?

3. What wisdom do you need to ask God for in your current season?

Prayer
Ask God to help you see your trials through His eyes. Pray for endurance that produces lasting joy, and for wisdom to run your race with focus and faith. Thank Him for being a generous Father who strengthens you for every step until you reach the finish line.
