September 1: Love in Action
Scripture
“We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?
Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.”
—1 John 3:16–20 (NLT)
Almost everyone knows John 3:16. You see it on billboards, at football games, even scribbled on the bottom of fast-food cups. It’s the verse that captures the heart of the gospel: God loved, so God gave. But how many of us know 1 John 3:16? Here John turns the spotlight on us, showing what our response to God’s love should look like. If John 3:16 tells us what God has done, 1 John 3:16 tells us what we are now called to do.
Real love is not sentimental—it’s sacrificial. Jesus laid down His life for us, and John insists that love demands we follow His example. It’s not about warm feelings or good intentions. Love looks like stepping into someone else’s burden. It looks like loosening your grip on comfort, possessions, or even your own plans, so another person can experience God’s care through you.
John then hits us with a tough question: if we see a brother or sister in need and have the means to help but show no compassion, how can God’s love truly be in us? This pushes love from abstract theory into the reality of daily choices. It shows up in how we use our time, how we spend our money, and how willing we are to be interrupted. Love isn’t just something we say; it’s something we do.
But this call to action isn’t a burden; it’s a source of assurance. John says our actions “show that we belong to the truth,” giving us confidence before God. Even when our hearts feel guilty, our tangible acts of love serve as evidence of His grace at work in us. Loving others doesn’t just bless them; it anchors our own hearts in the reality that we truly belong to Him.
Reflection
1. How does connecting John 3:16 (God’s love for you) and 1 John 3:16 (your love for others) give you a fuller picture of the gospel?
2. Where do you sense God inviting you to trade words of love for costly, tangible acts of love this week?
3. In what area of your life do you need to trust that God is “greater than your feelings” of guilt or inadequacy today, and simply rest in the truth that you belong to Him?
Prayer
Ask God to open your eyes to the needs around you today. Pray for courage to love with actions and not only with words. Thank Him that His love is greater than your feelings and rests securely in what Jesus has done.
