February 11: Love Or Nothing
Scripture
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
– 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 NLT
Paul understood something that we are still learning. In God’s Kingdom, love is not optional and it is not secondary. It is central. In 1 Corinthians 13 he strips away all the impressive things we might point to, eloquence, knowledge, sacrifice, even mountain-moving faith, and says that without love it all amounts to noise. Not “less effective.” Not “slightly diminished.” Nothing.
That should cause us to pause. We can be active in church, generous with our resources, bold in our convictions, and still miss the very heart of God if love is not the motive. Paul is not minimizing truth or spiritual gifts. He is clarifying what gives them meaning. Love is the atmosphere in which everything in the Christian life must exist. Without it, even our best efforts lose their weight.
Have you ever wondered why Jesus puts such relentless emphasis on love? Love your neighbor. Love your enemy. Love as I have loved you. The greatest of these is love. Over and over again we are brought back to this one command. Perhaps it is because God is love, and when we love, we reflect Him most clearly. Perhaps it is because this world is starving for something real and redemptive. Arguments are loud. Opinions are endless. But genuine, sacrificial love is rare.
Paul prayed in Ephesians that believers would grasp how wide and long and high and deep Christ’s love really is. It is deeper than we know and stronger than we imagine. The more we receive that love, the more naturally it flows through us. So maybe the question is not simply, “Am I doing the right things?” but “Am I doing them in love?” Today, let’s slow down long enough to receive His love again, and then step back into the world determined to give it away.
Reflection
1. Are there areas in your life where you are doing the right things, but love may not be the driving force behind them?
2. Is there someone in your life right now who needs to experience Christ’s love through you in a more intentional way?
3. How might your relationships change if love became the primary filter for your words, reactions, and decisions this week?
Prayer
Thank God for the love He has poured into you through Christ. Ask Him to search your heart and purify your motives so that love shapes everything you do. Pray for the grace and courage to reflect His patient, sacrificial love to the people around you today.
