November 11: Love That Overflows

Scripture
“May God our Father himself and our Master Jesus clear the road to you! And may the Master pour on the love so it fills your lives and splashes over on everyone around you, just as it does from us to you. May you be infused with strength and purity, filled with confidence in the presence of God our Father when our Master Jesus arrives with all his followers.”
—1 Thessalonians 3:11–13 (The Message)

Paul’s prayer for the Thessalonians is more than a farewell wish; it is a blessing overflowing with life and hope. He asks that God would clear the road for him to visit again, but even more, that the love of Christ would fill their hearts to the brim and spill over into every relationship. The imagery is pretty cool, divine love poured out so abundantly that it splashes onto everyone nearby. It is a picture of what happens when the life of God fills the heart of His people.

Paul acknowledges that this love is not something we can manufacture. It originates in God. “Just as it does from us to you,” he says, recognizing that any love he has shown has come first from the Lord. We can only give what we have received. That means the first step in loving others well is opening ourselves to receive the steady flow of God’s love. When our hearts are full of His grace, mercy, and affection, love naturally overflows. Kindness becomes reflex. Generosity becomes joy.

Paul also prays that they would be infused with strength and purity. These, too, come from God. We do not grit our teeth to become pure or muster inner strength from willpower. Strength comes through the Spirit who dwells within us, and purity comes through faith in the finished work of Christ. It is His cleansing that gives us the confidence to stand before God without fear or shame, fully known and fully loved.

So may our lives reflect this same prayer today. May the love of God fill our hearts to overflowing, spilling into our homes, workplaces, and communities. May we walk in the strength of His Spirit and the purity of His grace, living in confidence until the day Christ returns. The love of God was never meant to be contained. It was meant to flow through us. Let it flow as you go!

Reflection
1. How full of God’s love are you today?

2. Consider how His love can “splash over” into the lives of those around you?

3. How does resting in His strength and purity change the way you approach your daily challenges?

Prayer
Ask God to fill you with His love until it overflows into the lives of others. Pray that His Spirit would infuse you with strength and purity so that your life reflects His heart and your confidence grows in the hope of Christ’s return.
