Emmaus Church of Jacksonville FL

Families We Support
At Emmaus Church we believe that missions is not something that is optional, it is essential!

Before Jesus ascended to heaven He left us with this command; "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
(Mat. 28:19-20)

This was not a suggestion, but a command.

The question for us is whether or not we will be obedient to what Jesus has commanded.

Jesus also told his disciples to wait on the Holy Spirit who would give them power to be His "witnesses in "Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

Their mission would begin right in their hometown, Jerusalem.  It would then expand to the ends of the earth.

Likewise we believe that our mission should begin right here in Jacksonville.  For this reason we make it a point to be engaged in missions locally, as well as globally.

On an ongoing basis Emmaus Church currently supports these mission efforts:

In 1991, the Arnolds went to Africa and began pioneer church planting among the least accessible, unreached people.  Reaching out in a variety of ways, including sports, hospitality, literature, parties, tools, local school partnerships, seeds for farming, soccer teams, sportplex, eyeglasses, and tea debates, they have seen God at work in deepening relationships with their neighbors. Years passed without visible change, but God continued to be at work! Today, outward signs of God's grace are pointing to extreme decisions being made with life and death consequences both eternally and within the community!

Jose and Glenda Castro are overseas workers with Youth With A Mission or YWAM.  They spent 6 rewarding, blessed years in Thailand, serving in 3 main areas: church planting, receiving Latinos to Asia, and caring for the body of Christ in practical ways.  In 2013, God very clearly called Jose and Glenda to Nicaragua, Jose’s birth country, after him being gone for over 30 years.  They are serving now in 4 specific areas: sending Latin Americans to Asia and all unreached peoples through their ministry “LAsiaLink”, caring for the body of Christ in practical ways, caring for the community in ways that impact them physically and spiritually, and hosting short-term teams to help raise up a long-term interest in missions. God’s grace has been great in their lives and the Castro's believe their life calling to be Acts 20:24 (MSG): “What matters most to us is to finish what God started: the job the Master Jesus gave us of letting everyone we meet know all about this incredibly extravagant generosity of God.”  To God be the glory for the things He has done and is doing!
Brock & Kerri Johnson
Brock & Kerri Johnson
Serving in Guatemala
The Johnson's followed God's call to Guatemala in August of 2008.  As they worked and lived among the people of Magdalena and Buena Vista, God began several different ministry initiatives - the first of which was the 12x12 Love Project.  As time went on, the depth of certain issues in the homes, specifically related to abuse and addiction among the men of the village, came to light. Since then, the Johnson's began praying for God to begin a ministry for boys, allowing them to address deeper issues before its too late. Eventually, God began to shape a vision that would soon become the Buena Vista Sports Academy for Boys.  Brock has always worked in the business side of professional sports, which admittedly almost ruined him. He feels blessed to now be coaching and teaching boys who are far from the hoopla and self-absorption of professional sports. The entire family serves together through various roles at BVSA. Brock oversees the operation of the ministry, as well as coaches.  Kerrie helps run the education program, and takes very seriously the role of "second mom" to the boys.  Madi and Brooke help in the education center, and Jake is a member of the Rhinos.  Luciana Andrea is the newest addition to the family, and has made life just a little bit more of an adventure!  You can follow the Johnson's on their ministry websitedeepStreamguatemala.com and on Brock's blog.

We had the blessing to start serving God in the Buena Vista Sports Academy for Boys, in Guatemala in 2011.
It has been a calling for me, Mynor, since i was a kid, the desire to give my own people, specially young boys that can't afford it, the opportunity to learn how to play soccer.  I had the blessing to be a professional in the area before joining forces with the Johnson family through the BVSA Academy.  Now we are serving as a Coach and Tutor for the Rhino boys as well in the Operational Area of the Academy, also a part in training leaders for the future Academies. Our desire is to be able to impact lives so that they can have the same passion to love other people and share with them the wonderful gift of eternal life with Christ!
Thanks! Mynor, Walda, Noah and Ava Luna

Campus Ministry - CRU

Joel and Erin Jones may have only attended college for four years, but the significance of their involvement in Cru during those years continues to this day. Both Joel and Erin were highly involved with Cru as student leaders during their college years at the University of North Florida. Now, many years later, they are so thankful and grateful to God that they get to return to their alma mater to continue to work with Cru – but this time as staff!

In hindsight it’s so clear for them to see how God was leading them to this season: bringing Erin and Joel together as a couple through Cru, providing them both jobs for many years at UNF, blessing them with two amazing children (Emma and Ethan), prompting them to move to another state to continue to grow and learn, and then when the time was right, return them to Cru, and to UNF!

Their specific mission is to share the message of Jesus with the more than 16,000 students at UNF. As Cru staff, they work to introduce these students to Jesus, create life-changing community, and empower and equip the students to live their lives on a mission, so that upon graduation, 100% of their students are able to share Jesus wherever they are sent.

Jeff and Lucy Osborne are based in Ngong, Kenya.  They were married in 2008 and have twin boys, Ezra and Baraka, 13 years old.  They are very active in their church, situated in Kenya’s capitol city, Nairobi.  Jeff is the chairman of the Missions Committee there and Lucy leads discipleship training.  Both are active with the youth group, which, in Kenya, ranges from age 16 to 30.

Jeff has been a missionary with United World Mission, serving in Kenya since 1996.  He has been a church planter, living and working in the remote desert region of Kenya’s northwest frontier for six years among the Turkana tribe.  After losing his wife to cancer in 2004, he returned to the modern city of Nairobi where he now works to mobilize Kenya’s churches for involvement in global missions.

Lucy has been involved in mission since 1991 when she served as a church-planting missionary to Uganda. Since then, she has served with Youth With A Mission, Share International, the Africa Evangelical Alliance, and Finish The Task Afriserve in various capacities, including missionary trainer, church missions mobilizer and church planting organizer.  She is currently working on a Bachelor’s Degree in Missiology.

Together, Jeff and Lucy are close partners with Pastor Samson Kiriinya, who is the Director of Taveta Children’s Assistance in Taveta, Kenya.  This ministry is a feeding and educational outreach to the desperate orphaned and single-parent children of that town.  Jeff and Lucy assist Pastor Samson with financial planning, partnership development and logistical support.

David and Joy Speights have been living and working in Thailand since January, 1986. During that time, they have lived all over Thailand, and currently live in Southern Thailand.  The Speights have 3 sons and 2 daughters who have all grown up in Thailand.

Thailand has a prevalence of Buddhism that ranks among the highest in the world. According to the last census (2000) 94.6% of the total population are Buddhists. Muslims are the second largest religious group in Thailand at 4.6%.  Christians represent only 0.5% of the population.  Statistically, it appears that Christianity in Thailand may be growing at a slower rate than population growth.
