Emmaus Church of Jacksonville FL

Families We Support
At Emmaus Church we believe that missions is not something that is optional, it is essential!

Before Jesus ascended to heaven He left us with this command; "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
(Mat. 28:19-20)

This was not a suggestion, but a command.

The question for us is whether or not we will be obedient to what Jesus has commanded.

Jesus also told his disciples to wait on the Holy Spirit who would give them power to be His "witnesses in "Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

Their mission would begin right in their hometown, Jerusalem.  It would then expand to the ends of the earth.

Likewise we believe that our mission should begin right here in Jacksonville.  For this reason we make it a point to be engaged in missions locally, as well as globally.

On an ongoing basis Emmaus Church currently supports these mission efforts:

Hi! I am Brie Adams and I attended and graduated from the University of North Florida in the spring of 2019. During my time in college, I was involved with a campus ministry called the Navigators. The Navigators helped develop and strengthen my walk with Jesus through an emphasis on personal discipleship modeled after Paul and Timothy. After feeling the Lord calling me to become a vocational missionary, I prayed about what that would look like and felt God showing me the need for college students to hear the Gospel and be discipled in their walk with the Jesus.

Now as a recent college graduate, I am going back to the place where my relationship with God grew the most and serving on staff with the Navigators at the University of North Florida! My deepest hope and prayer for my time at UNF would be that God would use the ministry of the Navigators and my life to help multiply laborers who have a heart, skill, and vision for administering the Gospel to lost and hurting souls.

I am so excited to see what God does in the lives of college students at UNF and am so thankful for the opportunity to get to serve full time as staff with the Navigator ministry!

In 1991, the Arnolds went to Africa and began pioneer church planting among the least accessible, unreached people.  Reaching out in a variety of ways, including sports, hospitality, literature, parties, tools, local school partnerships, seeds for farming, soccer teams, sportplex, eyeglasses, and tea debates, they have seen God at work in deepening relationships with their neighbors. Years passed without visible change, but God continued to be at work! Today, outward signs of God's grace are pointing to extreme decisions being made with life and death consequences both eternally and within the community!

Jose and Glenda Castro are overseas workers with Youth With A Mission or YWAM.  They spent 6 rewarding, blessed years in Thailand, serving in 3 main areas: church planting, receiving Latinos to Asia, and caring for the body of Christ in practical ways.  In 2013, God very clearly called Jose and Glenda to Nicaragua, Jose’s birth country, after him being gone for over 30 years.  They are serving now in 4 specific areas: sending Latin Americans to Asia and all unreached peoples through their ministry “LAsiaLink”, caring for the body of Christ in practical ways, caring for the community in ways that impact them physically and spiritually, and hosting short-term teams to help raise up a long-term interest in missions. God’s grace has been great in their lives and the Castro's believe their life calling to be Acts 20:24 (MSG): “What matters most to us is to finish what God started: the job the Master Jesus gave us of letting everyone we meet know all about this incredibly extravagant generosity of God.”  To God be the glory for the things He has done and is doing!

The Johnson's followed God's call to Guatemala in August of 2008.  As they worked and lived among the people of Magdalena and Buena Vista, the depth of certain issues in the villages came to light. Since then, they began praying for God to begin a ministry to the boys, allowing them to address these deep issues before they became men. Eventually, God began to shape a vision that would soon become the Buena Vista Sports Academy for Boys.  After 10 years in Guatemala, and planting another academy in Honduras, they are currently in transition to West Africa.

Brock's professional background is in the business side of professional sports both as an NFL executive and sports agent - which admittedly almost ruined him! He feels blessed to now be coaching/teaching boys who are far from the hoopla and self-absorption of professional sports. The Johnson family has always served together at BVSA.  Brock and Kerrie oversee the ministry, including day-to-day operations, training new missionaries, and pioneering new academy plants. But their hearts are in the mission field, where they prefer to be sharing the gospel and discipling cross-culturally.  They have four children.  Madi (22) has since returned to the U.S., and is now a 2nd grade teacher in Jacksonville, FL.  Brooke (21), was married to Matt Rolfe in December 2018, and they are currently in transition to the mission field.  Jake (18) has returned to the U.S., and is attending Jacksonville University on a soccer scholarship.  Luciana Andrea (6) keeps us all on our toes, and is excited to move to Africa!  You can follow more of the Johnson's ongoing story on Brock's blog.

Campus Ministry - CRU

Erin’s life was significantly impacted by her years as a student in Cru at the University of North Florida. At a time in life when she was desperately seeking for her identity, Cru staff and students met her where she was and helped cut through the confusion by pointing her to the heart of God.

In 2014, God allowed her and her husband to return to their alma mater as campus field staff. For six years, it was a joy to pour into student’s lives the same truths that they had come to build their lives on. By God’s grace, they introduced these students to Jesus, created life-changing community, and equipped students to live their lives on a mission, so that upon graduation, 100% of their students were able to share Jesus wherever they were sent.

In 2019, God opened another door for Erin to continue her work in the Kingdom and mission of Cru by transitioning to the People & Culture Team for Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. As part of this team Erin now serves as the Coordinator for Part Time Field Staff. Through caring for staff from their point of entry at the application process to their ongoing field work she has the opportunity to help keep staff in healthy places and on healthy teams so that their longevity and capacity is high to continue serving with Cru for the Kingdom.

Thank you for coming alongside Erin in the mobilization of missionaries so that the Gospel can advance with greater speed and effectiveness.

We had the blessing to start serving God in the Buena Vista Sports Academy for Boys, in Guatemala in 2011.
It has been a calling for me, Mynor, since i was a kid, the desire to give my own people, specially young boys that can't afford it, the opportunity to learn how to play soccer.  I had the blessing to be a professional in the area before joining forces with the Johnson family through the BVSA Academy.  Now we are serving as a Coach and Tutor for the Rhino boys as well in the Operational Area of the Academy, also a part in training leaders for the future Academies. Our desire is to be able to impact lives so that they can have the same passion to love other people and share with them the wonderful gift of eternal life with Christ!

David and Taylor Neverman are on staff with Cru (formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ) serving college students in South Florida. They minister to the ethnically and culturally diverse population of Miami and the surrounding cities that hold half a million college students. Together they are helping launch new Gospel-centered movements on college campuses where there are no established ministries sharing their faith and discipling leaders. David's call is specific to ROTC students, drawing on his background in the core of cadets at Virginia Tech, while Taylor mainly focuses on investing in ethnic minority leaders and young women struggling with holiness. They are praying for God to raise up student leaders and multiplying believers on the 76 campuses within the Tri-Country area of South Florida!

Carl and Lisa Norton and their family are serving in San Lucas, Guatemala. Their ministry focuses on three aspects of orphan care.

*Continuous Orphan Care

Going into existing special needs children’s homes on  a weekly basis - building relationships with the children, nannies, and directors. They share the love of Christ through playing, singing, praying, reading bible stories and loving on the children in the homes.

*Preventative Orphan Care

Our ministry also makes weekly trips into a nearby village to build relationships with families in crisis, offer assistance when needed, play and pray for the children and families. The goal of this part of the ministry is to strengthen family ties so that families are able to stay together in a safe, healthy environment.

*Emergency Orphan Care

Serving the Shepherd, Loving His Lambs is expanding to take in children who are being removed from their home due to dangerous or unhealthy situations. This is similar to foster care in the United States.

Matthew and Brooke Rolfe will be relocating to Buena Vista, Guatemala in January of 2020, where they will be serving full time at the Buena Vista Sports Academy for boys (BVSA). BVSA is a ministry that uses the language of soccer as a tool to reach young boys in the community, aiming to break generational chains of sin, poverty, addiction, and spiritual lostness in tough places around the world. There, along with other BVSA missionaries, Matt and Brooke will have the opportunity to pour into these boys’ lives and teach them about following Jesus, respecting women, serving their community, and becoming loving husbands and fathers. BVSA believes that if we can lead the boys to Jesus, the impact will reach the girls and the women; and it will eventually rebuild broken families, transform cities, and change generations to come.

Brooke grew up in Guatemala, where her parents started BVSA in 2011. She moved back to the States in 2016 to pursue a college education, and during that time met her husband, Matt. Matt traveled with Brooke to Guatemala several times, where he fell in love with the place and the people. Matt and Brooke were married in December 2018, and soon after felt the call to GO!

Matt and Brooke have a love for music, people, and sharing the gospel. Their prayer is that God would be glorified through their lives and that He would send them to the places where His love is needed the most.

Thailand has a prevalence of Buddhism that ranks among the highest in the world. According to the last census (2000) 94.6% of the total population are Buddhists. Muslims are the second largest religious group in Thailand at 4.6%.  Christians represent only 0.5% of the population.  Statistically, it appears that Christianity in Thailand may be growing at a slower rate than population growth.

Hi we are the Spraggs.  When we moved to the Kingdom of Swaziland, now known as the Kingdom of eSwatini, we were a family of 5 and have increased to a family of 7.  Stephen and Charity are the parents to Hannah, Luke, Titus, Busanda & B (lives with us throughout the week), and have lived in eSwatini since 2014.   We serve through Adventures in Missions, which is a ministry that is focused on “transforming individuals who will transform communities”.  A key platform we use is Care Points in communities where children come and receive food, love, care and discipleship 5 days a week.

Stephen took on the pastoral responsibility of leading and shepherding a local multi-cultural church that uses English as it’s medium.   English is a bridge between many cultures, and we desire to be a part of God creating an incredible diverse church that will live out His Kingdom culture, and in turn display His Glory.

We also look forward to future ministry opportunities that God is beginning, in, and through our family, such as, equipping of local pastors and missionary care.
