Our Hope
Is in You
Psalm 33:20–22 · NLT

Scripture
We put our hope in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord,
for our hope is in you alone.
— Psalm 33:20–22 (NLT)

We all put our hope somewhere. For some, it’s in money or security. For others, it’s in relationships, accomplishments, or circumstances going a certain way. But all those things shift and fade. That’s why the psalmist reminds us that true, lasting hope can only be found in the Lord.

He is our help and our shield. He doesn’t just care for us — He actively protects us. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). That means whatever you’re facing today, you’re not alone. You have a God who sees, who cares, and who acts on your behalf.

“
Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay. But look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.1

— C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

And because He is trustworthy, our hearts can rejoice. Not because life is perfect, but because His presence is with us and His love is unfailing. Even in uncertainty, He surrounds us with mercy and peace. As Lamentations reminds us, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him'” (Lamentations 3:22–24, ESV).

So today, if your hope has been drifting toward lesser things, now is the time to pull it back. Anchor it where it belongs. Put your hope in the One who never fails. Trust in His holy name and rest in His presence. Let your heart rejoice — not because life is easy, but because He is with you, for you, and holding you steady every step of the way.

Reflection
1
Where are you most tempted to place your hope apart from God?

2
How have you seen God be your help and shield in a specific situation?

3
What specific step can you take today to shift your hope from temporary things to the Lord?

Prayer
Thank God for being your help, your shield, and your source of hope. Ask Him to surround you with His unfailing love and help you trust Him fully. Pray for a heart that rejoices in His presence and stays anchored in His promises.
