December 3 – Peace in the Storm
Scripture
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 (NLT)
Jesus does not sugarcoat life. He doesn’t pretend that following Him will spare us from pain. In fact, He says plainly that trials and sorrows are guaranteed. But He also gives us something infinitely greater: Himself. “Peace in me,” He says. Not peace in circumstances. Not peace in our own strength. Peace in Him. The One who is unshaken, the One who holds all things together, the One who has already overcome.
When we walk through suffering, it is easy to believe God is distant or uninterested. But Jesus knows pain firsthand. He entered our world, carried our burdens, felt our grief, and faced rejection, injustice, and even death. As Timothy Keller puts it, “The basic premise of religion, that if you live a good life, things will go well for you, is wrong. Jesus was the most morally upright person who ever lived, yet He had a life filled with the experience of poverty, rejection, injustice, and even torture.”¹ He understands our sorrow more deeply than we realize. This is why He can comfort us so fully.
Jesus wants His followers to have peace even when the storm rages. He is present in the boat, just as He was with His disciples. He does not always calm the storm right away, but He always calms His people in the midst of it. Fear loses its grip when we remember who is with us. Your situation may feel overwhelming, but the One who overcame the world walks with you, strengthens you, and holds you steady.
So take heart today. Whatever you are facing, you do not face it alone. He has overcome the world, and His victory covers you. Turn to Him, lean into His presence, and let His peace carry you through whatever lies ahead.
Reflection
1. Where do you most need the peace of Jesus today?
2. How does knowing that Jesus understands your suffering bring comfort to your heart?
3. What step can you take to turn toward His presence instead of your fears this week?
Prayer
Ask Jesus to fill you with His peace and remind you of His presence in the storms you face. Pray for the grace to trust Him even when life feels overwhelming.
