Peace Like a River

Scripture

“This is what the Lord says, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow. Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.'”
—Isaiah 48:17–18 (NLT)

When God speaks through Isaiah here, His tone is both tender and grieving. Israel had gone astray, but the Lord reminds them of who He is. He’s their Redeemer, the Holy One, the God who rescues and saves. He never commands to simply restrict, His intention is always to bless. His paths are not dead ends but roads that lead to life.

But tragically, His people wouldn’t listen. By resisting His voice, they walked away from the very blessing He longed to give. Think about the picture He uses: peace like a gentle, constant river and righteousness like the powerful, rolling waves of the sea. He was offering a life of deep rest and unwavering strength, but they chose their own way instead.

This passage is not just history, it’s a mirror. How often do we miss the blessing of God by choosing our own way instead of His? We chase after control, only to end up restless. We grasp for success, only to find emptiness.

“A life in the will of God is rest and strength and blessing.”¹
—Andrew Murray, Holy in Christ

That’s exactly what God was offering Israel, and exactly what He still offers us. The good news is that His invitation still stands. Our Redeemer is patient. The Holy One is kind. Peace like a river is not beyond reach, it flows wherever we walk in step with Him. To obey is not to miss out but to discover life as it was meant to be lived. So today, wherever you’ve been grasping for control or chasing your own version of peace, let it go, and let His river carry you instead.

Reflection

  1. “The Lord says He ‘teaches you what is good for you.’ In what area of your life do you struggle to believe that God’s way is truly better than your own?”
  2. How do Isaiah’s images of peace like a river and righteousness like the sea speak to your longing for wholeness?
  3. What step of obedience is God asking you to take today in order to walk more fully in His blessing?

Prayer

Ask God to give you a heart that listens closely to His voice. Pray for the courage to walk in obedience, trusting that His ways always lead to life. Thank Him that He is your Redeemer and that His peace and righteousness are available to you today.
