January 2: People Of Prayer
Scripture
Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we ask you to pray for us. Pray that the Lord’s message will spread rapidly and be honored wherever it goes, just as when it came to you. 2 Pray, too, that we will be rescued from wicked and evil people, for not everyone is a believer. 3 But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. 4 And we are confident in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we commanded you. 5 May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ.
-2 Thessalonians 3:1-5
In this closing section of his letter, Paul reveals something deeply important about the life of faith. He asks the believers in Thessalonica to pray for him. Not once, but repeatedly. Paul depends on the prayers of God’s people. He asks that the message of the Lord would spread rapidly and be honored wherever it goes, just as it was among them. The advance of the gospel, Paul reminds us, is not driven by human strength alone, but by God working through the prayers of His people.
Paul also asks for prayer for protection. He is honest about the reality of opposition, acknowledging that not everyone is a believer and that wicked and evil people resist God’s work. Yet this realism is not rooted in fear. It is immediately followed by reassurance. “The Lord is faithful,” Paul says, and He will strengthen and guard His people from the evil one. The confidence of the Christian life is not found in ideal circumstances, but in the faithfulness of God.
What’s amazing is that after asking for prayer, Paul turns around and prays for the very people he has just appealed to. His prayer goes beyond safety or success. He prays that the Lord would lead their hearts into a deeper understanding and expression of the love of God. Paul knows that knowing God’s love is not merely intellectual. The more fully we understand His love, the more naturally it flows through us to others.
Following Jesus in a broken world is not easy, and Paul never pretends that it is. But he reminds us that we do not walk this road alone. The Lord is faithful, and He is at work in us. As we learn to pray, to trust God’s protection, and to receive His love more deeply, He forms in us a patient endurance that can only come from Christ. May we be a people who keep going, strengthened by His faithfulness and shaped by His love.
Reflection
1. How does Paul’s request for prayer challenge or encourage the way you view prayer in your own life?
2. Where do you most need to be reminded that the Lord is faithful and actively guarding and strengthening you?
3. How might a deeper understanding of God’s love shape the way you respond to challenges and relationships right now?
Prayer
Thank God for His faithfulness and for His promise to strengthen and guard you. Ask Him to deepen your understanding of His love and to let that love be expressed more fully through your life. Pray for patience and endurance that comes from Christ as you continue to follow Him in a broken and challenging world.
