Qualified, Rescued, Redeemed

Scripture

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

—Colossians 1:11–14 (NLT)

Where do strength, patience, joy, and thankfulness come from? Paul reminds the Colossians, and us, that these aren’t things we create through effort or discipline. They grow out of our awareness of what God has already done for us. He says, “He has enabled you,” or qualified you, “to share in the inheritance of His people.” When you really grasp that truth, it changes how you face life.

So much of life feels like trying to prove your worth, chasing approval, success, or validation. But Paul flips that script entirely. Your qualification, your right to belong, doesn’t come from anything you do. It comes from what the Father has done. He has made you His own through Christ, granting you a share in an eternal inheritance that can never be earned or lost.

“Our identity rests in God’s relentless tenderness for us revealed in Jesus Christ.”
— Brennan Manning¹

That’s the whole shift Paul is describing. We don’t strive for acceptance; we live from it. Paul continues with even more good news: God “has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.” This is a radical change of citizenship, a total shift in allegiance and identity. We are no longer defined by our past darkness but by the present reality of His light and love.

This new identity in Christ changes everything about how you live. It is not just a future hope but a present reality that empowers you each day. So stop trying to qualify yourself. Rest in what’s already true: you are qualified, rescued, and redeemed.

Reflection

  1. In what areas of your life do you still feel like you need to “prove your worth” or earn God’s approval?
  2. How does the truth that God has already qualified and rescued you change your perspective on failure or insecurity?
  3. What does it look like for you to practically live as a “citizen of the Kingdom” today?

Prayer
Thank God for qualifying you through the finished work of Christ. Ask Him to help you stop striving and rest in the identity He has given you. Pray for the strength, patience, and joy that flow from knowing you are rescued, forgiven, and eternally His.
