August 14: Redeeming Our Pain
Scripture
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.
—2 Corinthians 1:3–7 (NLT)
Here Paul gives us a whole new way of looking at suffering. He begins by reminding us that God is the source of all comfort. This merciful and compassionate Father promises to comfort us in our time of need. But His comfort is not meant to stop with us.
As we all know, suffering is never easy. The weight of loss, disappointment, illness, betrayal, or hardship can feel overwhelming. Pain is real, and the road through it can be long and exhausting. Paul himself was no stranger to deep trials, yet he writes with the assurance that God meets us right in the middle of them, not only after they are over. His presence doesn’t always remove the difficulty, but it does bring a sustaining strength and a hope that the suffering will not be wasted.
Paul shows us that God comforts us so we can extend that same comfort to others who are suffering. It is not just about helping us endure. It is about equipping us to walk alongside others in their pain. The greater the suffering we face, the greater the comfort Christ gives, and the more we are able to share that comfort with others.
In this way, God uses us as agents of His love and grace. Our trials become the very thing that equips us to encourage, strengthen, and bring hope to others. As we receive His comfort and share it, a beautiful cycle begins. Those we comfort are strengthened to endure, and then they can comfort others. Through this, the love and presence of Christ becomes tangible and visible in our lives. And through it all, God redeems our pain and suffering, bringing something beautiful into the world.
Reflection
1. When have you experienced God’s comfort in a time of deep pain or difficulty?
2. Who in your life could benefit from the comfort you have received from God?
3. How can you be more intentional in sharing God’s comfort with others?
Prayer
Thank God for the comfort He has given you in your trials. Ask Him to be especially near to you and others who are walking through deep pain. Pray for the courage and compassion to share His love and presence with those who are hurting.
