Rescued From the Curse

Scripture
“But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.’ Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.”
—Galatians 3:13–14 (NLT)

Paul makes a bold claim here: Christ’s rescue isn’t a private transaction between you and God alone. It reaches all the way back to a promise made to Abraham, and it reaches all the way out to include people who were never part of God’s covenant people to begin with. The cross didn’t just settle a debt; it opened a door that had been closed for generations.

That’s the heart of verse 14: “God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham.” If you’re a believer today, you are living proof that God’s promise stretched further than anyone in Abraham’s day could have imagined. You didn’t earn a place in this story. You were written into it.

“Let us become expert in the art of transferring our sins, our death, and every evil from ourselves to Christ, and Christ’s righteousness and blessing from Christ to ourselves.”
— Martin Luther¹

And what you receive isn’t just a legal status, it’s a Person. Paul says believers “receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.” That means the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in you, producing love, joy, peace, and every other fruit of a life rooted in Him. So surrender to the Spirit today. Let Him lead you as you live for Christ, seeking first His Kingdom above all else.

Reflection

  1. How does it change your perspective to know that Christ’s blessing was always meant to reach beyond just one people group, all the way to you?
  2. What is the difference between a legal pardon and actually receiving the Spirit? Why does that distinction matter?
  3. What is one way you can lean into the abundant life Jesus promised you today?

Prayer
Thank God for including you in the blessing promised to Abraham through Christ. Ask Him to fill you afresh with His Spirit so you can live in the freedom and abundance of His Kingdom today.
