Rest for the Restless Soul

Scripture
*Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken….

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.*
Psalm 62:1–2, 5–8 (NIV)

Is your soul at rest today? David could declare with confidence that his soul was at rest in the Lord because he knew exactly where his salvation, hope, and strength came from. His life was not anchored in shifting circumstances or the shaky foundations of this world. His foundation was God Himself, his rock, his fortress, and refuge.

David’s confidence wasn’t theoretical. He lived through betrayal, enemies, and seasons of deep pain and fear. Yet he could still say, “I will not be shaken.” Why? Because he trusted in God alone. Everything else, people, possessions, position, can crumble. But when your life is built on God as your rock, nothing can ultimately move you.

This is a question worth asking: What is your foundation built on? Where do you look for protection and stability? Too often, our hearts grasp at control, money, relationships, or even our own strength. But David reminds us that salvation and honor don’t come from what we can build. They come from God alone.

“The rest, the silence, the stillness, and the patient waiting, all find their strength and joy in God Himself.”
— Andrew Murray¹

And here’s the invitation: “Trust in him at all times… pour out your hearts to him.” Rest doesn’t come by pretending everything is fine. It comes when you bring the worries, fears, and whys of life into God’s presence. So the next time you feel that familiar restlessness rise up, don’t numb it or try to outrun it. Bring it to Him, and let Him be the place your soul finally stops searching.

Reflection

  1. Where are you tempted to look for stability and rest apart from God?
  2. How does remembering God as your rock and refuge change the way you face uncertainty?
  3. What would it look like for you to “pour out your heart to him” in this season?

Prayer
Thank God for being your rock, fortress, and refuge. Ask Him to help you find true rest in Him and not in the unstable things of this world. Pour out your heart to Him and ask Him to help you always trust Him.
