March 7: Rest for the Weary

Scripture
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.’”
—Matthew 11:28–30 (NLT)

Life becomes exhausting when we carry burdens we were never meant to bear. The weight of striving, expectations, guilt, and shame slowly wears us down. Into that weariness Jesus speaks a simple invitation: “Come to me… and I will give you rest.” He does not pile more demands onto our lives. Instead, He invites us to exchange our heavy burdens for His way of life.

Jesus describes that life using the image of a yoke. In the ancient world a yoke linked two oxen together so they could share the load while plowing a field. The stronger ox carried most of the weight and guided the younger one along the path. When Jesus invites us to take His yoke, He is inviting us into a relationship where we walk closely with Him, learning to move in step with Him.

A rabbi’s “yoke” was also a way of describing his teaching and way of life. To take on a rabbi’s yoke meant becoming his disciple. Jesus is inviting us into that kind of life with Him. But unlike the heavy religious burdens placed on people in His day, His way is marked by humility and grace. Eugene Peterson captured this beautifully in his paraphrase of Jesus’ words: “Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.”¹

So the question for us is simple: are we living under the crushing weight of our own striving, or are we living under the easy yoke of Jesus? His invitation still stands today. Bring Him the burdens you were never meant to carry. Walk closely with Him and learn His way. And as you do, you will begin to discover something the world cannot offer—a deep rest for your soul.

Reflection
1. What burdens are you currently carrying that Jesus is inviting you to release to Him?

2. In what ways do you tend to rely on your own strength rather than walking in step with Jesus?

3. What would it look like in your daily life to take on Jesus’ yoke and learn from Him?

Prayer
Ask God to reveal any burdens you have been carrying in your own strength and to help you surrender them to Jesus. Pray for a deeper understanding of what it means to walk in His way and experience the rest He offers.
