January 29: Safe And Secure
Scripture
The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. 11 The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. 12 Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.
– Proverbs 18:10-12 NLT
There are very few things in this world that are truly stable, secure, and trustworthy. Economies can shift overnight. Nations that appear strong can be shaken in a moment. Even our own health can change with a single phone call. Life has a way of reminding us that much of what we rely on is fragile and temporary. We live in a world where what feels solid today can feel uncertain tomorrow.
Against that backdrop, Proverbs gives us a powerful contrast. “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.” God is not like the shifting realities of this world. His presence is steady. His character is unchanging. When we run to Him, not casually, but intentionally, we find safety that circumstances cannot steal. This does not mean life will be free from storms, but it does mean we are never without shelter.
The proverb then exposes a common temptation. Wealth can feel like security. Resources can give the illusion of control. The rich are described as imagining their wealth to be a high wall of safety. But money, like everything else in this world, is uncertain. Pride convinces us we are self-sufficient. Humility reminds us we are not. Scripture is clear, haughtiness goes before destruction, but humility opens the door to honor. Trusting in anything other than God will eventually leave us exposed.
Jesus echoes this wisdom when He speaks of building our lives on a solid foundation. Those who hear His words and put them into practice are like someone who builds on rock. When the storms come, and they will, that life stands firm. The Lord is our true fortress. He is the only One worthy of our full trust. May we be people who run to Him first, not as a last resort, and find in Him the security, comfort, and grace our hearts are really longing for.
Reflection
1. When life feels uncertain or unstable, where do you instinctively run first for a sense of security or control?
2. In what ways might God be inviting you to loosen your grip on false sources of safety and trust Him more fully?
3. How does choosing humility over self-reliance reshape the way you face challenges, decisions, and the future?
Prayer
Take time to acknowledge the things you have relied on for security apart from God. Thank the Lord for being a strong fortress who does not change with circumstances. Ask Him to grow humility in your heart and to help you run to Him first in times of fear, uncertainty, or need.
