Show Me the Way
Scripture
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. Rescue me from my enemies, Lord, for I hide myself in you. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
—Psalm 143:8–10 (NIV)
What’s your first move when you need direction? Who do you go to? In this psalm, David shows us his starting point, and it’s a powerful one. Before anything else, he goes straight to the Lord. His first request isn’t for answers, but for a reminder of God’s character: “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love.” He knows that grounding himself in God’s faithful love is the essential first step before facing any decision.
Notice the posture of David’s heart. He doesn’t just want a quick answer; he wants God Himself. He prays, “Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” This is total surrender, placing his very life into God’s hands. He expects God not only to lead him down the right path but also to protect him from his enemies along the way. It’s a beautiful picture of complete dependence.
This is the posture of a true disciple. Instead of scrambling for control or frantically making our own plans, we begin by humbly asking God, “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.” His good Spirit delights to lead us, not onto rough and treacherous terrain, but onto level ground.
“Nine-tenths of the difficulties are overcome when our hearts are ready to do the Lord’s will, whatever it may be.”
— George Müller¹
There we find moral clarity, spiritual stability, and steady footing in His will. This prayer of David is more than ancient words, it’s a pathway for us today. Whatever season you’re walking through, rest in the Father’s unfailing love and trust His Spirit to guide your steps. So this morning, before you make a single plan, ask Him first. Let His unfailing love be the ground you stand on before you take a single step.
Reflection
- Where do you usually turn first when you need direction—God, yourself, or others?
- How can you make space each morning to, like David, let God’s unfailing love ground you for the rest of your day?
- What is one decision or area of your life where you need to stop striving and start trusting God’s Spirit to lead you?
Prayer
Ask God to remind you daily of His unfailing love and to guide you into His will. Pray that His Spirit will steady your steps and lead you forward on the “level ground” of His good purposes.
