January 28: Surrounded By Grace

Scripture
O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. 5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! 7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. 9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
– Psalm 139:1-10 NLT

Psalm 139 opens with this truth: God knows us completely. David says the Lord has examined his heart and knows everything about him, his actions, his thoughts, even his words before he speaks them. Nothing about David’s life is hidden from God. There is no pretending or performing. God knows the real David, fully and exhaustively.

That kind of knowledge can feel unsettling if we’re honest. To be fully known is risky. And yet David is not afraid. Why? Because the God who knows him completely also surrounds him with care. “You go before me and follow me,” David says. God is not standing at a distance frowning. He is near, attentive, and actively involved. His hand rests on David’s life in blessing, not condemnation.

David also realizes there is nowhere he can go where God is not already present. Whether in joy or sorrow, obedience or wandering, God’s Spirit is there. David doesn’t speak of this as a threat, but as a comfort. He stops trying to run or hide and instead rests in the steady presence of the Lord. God’s nearness means guidance, strength, and support in every place and season.

This is where grace shines through clearly. Brennan Manning once wrote, “God loves you as you are, not as you should be, because nobody is as they should be.”¹ David seems to understand that truth long before it was ever written. The God who knows everything about us still chooses to be with us, to bless us, and to lead us. Our only fitting response is surrender and worship, trusting ourselves to the One who knows us fully and loves us completely.

Reflection
1. What emotions surface when you consider that God knows you completely, your thoughts, words, and actions, and still chooses to love you?

2. Are there areas of your life where you are still trying to hide, perform, or manage your image before God rather than resting in His grace?

3. How does the truth of God’s constant presence bring comfort or challenge to the way you walk with Him today?

Prayer
Thank the Lord for knowing you fully and loving you completely. Ask Him to help you stop striving or hiding and to rest in His nearness. Pray for a heart that willingly surrenders every part of life to the God who goes before you, walks beside you, and strengthens you with His faithful presence.
