December 4 – The Bread of Life

Scripture
“Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’
‘Sir,’ they said, ‘give us that bread every day.’
Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty… Those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.’”
John 6:32–37 (NLT)

After feeding the five thousand, the crowds followed Jesus across the lake looking for another miracle. They reminded Him of the manna God provided in the wilderness and asked for a sign. Jesus gently corrected them that it wasn’t Moses who gave the manna. God did. And the Father was now offering something far better than physical bread. He was offering the true bread from heaven, the One who gives life to the world.

When the people heard this, they said, “Give us that bread every day.” They wanted what Jesus described, but they hadn’t yet understood it. Jesus then revealed the truth their hearts were longing for: “I am the bread of life.” He wasn’t offering something temporary or external. He was offering Himself. He was offering a life that satisfies the deepest hunger of the human soul. Yet their problem was simple and tragic. They saw the miracles, they heard His teaching, and still they did not believe.

Jesus promises that whoever comes to Him will never hunger or thirst again. This is not about physical satisfaction but soul satisfaction. The hunger we feel for meaning, identity, peace, forgiveness, and belonging can only be filled by Him. Everything else eventually leaves us empty. But Jesus gives life that cannot be taken away. And the most beautiful promise in this passage is this: “I will never reject them.” Anyone who truly comes to Jesus is received, welcomed, and forgiven.

And this invitation still stands today. Jesus is still offering Himself as the true bread of life, and many around us have not yet received Him. If we have tasted His grace and found the satisfaction He brings, then we also carry the privilege of helping others discover that same life. As you come to Him, rest in His promise that He will never turn you away. And as you walk with Him, trust that He will lead you to those who are still hungry for hope and give you the grace to point them to Him.

Reflection
1. What areas of your life reveal a hunger that only Jesus can satisfy?

2. How does Jesus’ promise to never reject anyone who comes to Him encourage you today?

3. What step can you take to come to Him in a deeper way this week?

Prayer
Thank Jesus for being the bread of life and ask Him to satisfy the deepest hunger of your soul. Ask Him to help you come to Him daily with trust and to open doors to share His hope with others.
