August 16: The End is Coming Soon

Scripture
The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
—1 Peter 4:7–10 (NLT)

Devotional Thought
“The end of the world is coming soon.” Peter’s words are meant to grab our attention and give us an urgent sense of perspective. While “soon” in God’s economy is different from ours, as Peter later writes, “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” (2 Peter 3:8). Even so, the truth remains: this world as we know it has an expiration date. Peter isn’t trying to scare us. He’s trying to focus us. Living with the reality of the end in view changes how we live in the here and now.

So what does this focused, end-times living look like? Peter gives us a clear, practical game plan. First, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. In a world overflowing with distractions, prayer is what anchors our hearts to eternal reality. It aligns our priorities with God’s Kingdom and keeps us spiritually sober and ready.

Next, and “most important of all,” he says, “continue to show deep love for each other.” This is the defining mark of a community waiting for its King. This love is practical: it “covers a multitude of sins,” meaning it’s quick to forgive and extend grace, just as Christ did for us. It’s also hospitable, “cheerfully” sharing our homes and our resources. This is love in action.

This is how we live with urgency: praying earnestly, loving deeply, and serving faithfully until the day our Lord returns. But this isn’t just theory, it’s a call to action. What would it look like for you to live this way today? Maybe it means setting aside time for undistracted prayer. Maybe it means offering forgiveness to someone who doesn’t deserve it, or opening your home to someone in need. Maybe it means dusting off a gift God has given you and using it to bless someone else. However He leads, don’t wait. The end of all things is nearer than we think, and the time to live like Jesus is now.

Reflection
1. What would it look like to live today with more urgency, knowing that the end of all things is near?

2. Who in your life needs to experience the kind of love and grace God has shown you?

3. What specific gift has God given you, and how can you intentionally use it this week to serve someone else?

Prayer Focus
Ask the Lord to help you live with greater purpose and focus. Pray for a devoted heart in prayer, a deep love for others, and the courage to use your gifts to serve His Kingdom.
