The Fountain of Life
Scripture
Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the ocean depths.
You care for people and animals alike, O Lord.
How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter
in the shadow of your wings.
You feed them from the abundance of your own house,
letting them drink from your river of delights.
For you are the fountain of life,
the light by which we see.
Psalm 36:5–9 (NLT)
David’s words here read less like careful theology and more like a man standing in awe, reaching for the largest images he can find. God’s unfailing love is as vast as the heavens. His faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. His righteousness stands like the mighty mountains, His justice runs as deep as the ocean. These are not abstract qualities David is admiring from a distance. They are rooted in the character of a God who cares deeply for everything He has made, not just people but every living creature. He provides, sustains, and shelters, and He does it without fail, season after season, generation after generation.
What makes this kind of love remarkable is not just its size but its persistence. God’s love does not depend on our behavior holding steady. It is not a reward we earn by staying close or a gift He withdraws when we wander.
“When God makes a covenant with us, God says: I will love you with an everlasting love. I will be faithful to you, even when you run away from me, reject me, or betray me.”¹
— Henri Nouwen, The Return of the Prodigal Son
Nouwen put into plain words what David is marveling at in poetry. This is a love that absorbs our betrayals rather than being undone by them. It is a faithfulness that does not wait for us to deserve it. All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of His wings, David writes, and that shelter is not reserved for those who have earned their way in. It is offered freely, to anyone willing to come and stand beneath it.
He is not only the sustainer of life but also its very source. Every breath we take, every flash of clarity, every glimpse of goodness comes from Him. In your light, David writes, we see light. God does not just give us physical life. He illuminates the path in front of us and opens our eyes to the beauty of who He is. How amazing it is to know this God, to be loved by Him, sustained by Him, and invited to find shelter in Him. He is vast and unsearchable, yet near and faithful. May your heart find rest today in the shadow of His wings.
Reflection:
- What part of God’s character in this passage speaks to your heart most today, His love, justice, provision, or something else?
- In what areas of your life do you need to be reminded that God is your fountain and your light?
- How can you practice resting in the shelter of God’s love this week?
Prayer:
Thank God for His unfailing love and faithful provision. Ask Him to open your eyes to His beauty and help you see all of life through His light. Rest in the truth that He is your source, your shelter, and your delight.
