December 5 – The Light That Leads to Life
Scripture
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’”
John 8:12 (NLT)
Yesterday we reflected on Jesus as the bread of life, the One who satisfies the deepest hunger of our souls. Today He gives us another picture of who He is: the light of the world. John tells us in chapter 1 that Jesus is the true light who gives light to everyone (John 1:9). In a world where so many feel confused, discouraged, or unsure of which way to go, Jesus is the One who brings clarity, hope, and direction. When we walk with Him, we do not have to stumble around in the dark. His light leads us into the life we were created for.
This light is not simply information or insight. It is life itself. John says, “In Him was life, and that life was the light of men” (John 1:4). Jesus is full of life, overflowing with grace and truth, and He offers that life to anyone willing to receive it. His light reveals what is broken, heals what is hurting, and warms the places within us that have grown cold. The question is never whether His light is shining. The question is whether we will draw near to it.
So we must ask ourselves: Have we come to the light? Have we truly received the life Jesus offers? And are we choosing to walk in that light each day? Following Jesus is not a single moment in time. It is a steady, daily step into His presence, His truth, and His ways. The more we walk with Him, the more His light frees us from the darkness that once held us captive.
But the story does not end there. When Jesus brings His light into our lives, we ourselves become lights in this world. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), meaning His light now shines through us to those around us. It should not be hidden or kept to ourselves. So let your light shine today and let your life reflect the grace, truth, and hope of the One who rescued you from darkness and brought you into His marvelous light.
Reflection
1. Where do you sense Jesus inviting you to step out of darkness and walk more fully in His light?
2. How has His light brought life and clarity into your story?
3. What is one way you can shine His light to someone around you today?
Prayer
Thank the Lord for bringing His light into your life. Ask Him to help you walk in that light each day and to let it shine through you so others may see His love and truth.
