The Scent of Sacrifice
Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
Ephesians 5:1–2 (NLT)
Children naturally imitate their parents. Sometimes it fills us with joy, and other times it’s a bit sobering when they mirror things we never wanted to pass on. In the same way, Paul calls us to imitate our Father in heaven. As His beloved children, our lives are meant to reflect His character in everything we do.
Of course, this doesn’t always come easily. Following God often means unlearning old patterns, saying no to selfish desires, and saying yes to His Kingdom way. Imitating God is not about perfection, but about surrender, choosing daily to walk in step with the Spirit who shapes us into Christ’s likeness.
“To follow Jesus, then, meant to walk alongside him in a posture of listening, learning, observation, obedience, and imitation.”
— John Mark Comer¹
And God has given us the clearest picture of what this looks like: Jesus Himself. He loved us and gave Himself up for us, offering His life as a sacrifice. Paul says this was a “pleasing aroma” to God. To love by giving yourself away is to mirror Jesus, and that kind of love is worship that brings joy to the Father.
To imitate God, then, is to live as Jesus lived: walking in love, offering yourself in humility, and laying down your own way for the sake of His Kingdom. So today, when you face a choice between your comfort and someone else’s need, let that be your small act of imitation.
Reflection
- Where in your life do you find it hardest to imitate God’s love?
- How does Jesus’ example of self-giving love challenge the way you approach your relationships and choices?
- What would it look like for your life this week to become a “pleasing aroma” to God?
Prayer
Thank God for calling you His beloved child. Ask Him to help you let go of selfish desires and follow Christ’s example of love. Pray that your life would become a fragrance that reflects Jesus and delights the Father.
