September 30: The Verdict Is In
Scripture
For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants. In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge, so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.
“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”
—John 5:21–24 (NLT)
These words from Jesus are both sobering and deeply encouraging. He declares that He has the same power to give life as the Father. The authority to raise the dead and to judge has been entrusted to Him. That means Jesus is not just another teacher or prophet—He is the One before whom every person will one day stand.
But here’s the incredible promise: “Those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life.” Notice the tense, Jesus doesn’t say “will have” but “have eternal life”. It’s not a future possibility but a present reality for those who believe. And then He says something even more amazing: “They will never be condemned for their sins.” The Judge Himself declares that the verdict is already in. Those who are in Christ are not guilty. They have already crossed over from death into life.
This changes everything. We no longer have to live in fear of judgment or wonder if we’ve done enough to earn God’s favor. The cross has settled it. The One with absolute authority to judge has chosen instead to save. The gavel has fallen, and the case is closed. In Him, you are forgiven, free, and alive.
So today, live in that freedom. Don’t carry the weight of sins Christ has already paid for. Don’t let shame or fear have the final word. The final word belongs to Jesus, and He has declared you “Not guilty.” Walk in that truth, and let the life He gives shine through you to a world still waiting to hear the good news.
Reflection
1. How does it impact you to know that eternal life is not just a future hope but a present reality in Christ?
2. What sins or regrets are you still carrying that Jesus has already forgiven?
3. How can you live more boldly in the freedom of “not guilty” today?
Prayer
Thank Jesus for taking your judgment upon Himself and declaring you “not guilty.” Ask Him to help you walk each day in the freedom and confidence of the life He has given you.
