The Verdict is in… Not Guilty!
Scripture
“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.”
—Romans 8:1–3 (NLT)
There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. Read that again. No condemnation. None. Not partial, not delayed, not dependent on your performance. If you are in Christ, your verdict has been declared: free, forgiven, redeemed.
But let’s be honest, there are days we don’t feel that freedom. We carry shame from our past. We hear the voice of the accuser whispering lies. We start to believe that our failures define us. That’s why this passage matters so much. The Law, as good as it was, could never save us. It only pointed out how far we fall short. But Jesus did what the law could not do. He stepped into our brokenness, took on our humanity, and broke sin’s grip by becoming the sacrifice we needed.
Now, because we belong to Him, the Spirit of God has set us free. Not just from guilt, but from the power of sin itself. That means we don’t have to live under shame anymore. We are no longer defined by our worst moments. We belong to Jesus and in Him, we are new creations.
John Piper once said, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. That’s the essence of Christianity. That’s the central, foundational message of God to the world.”¹ This is what we must hold onto, especially when the weight of our past tries to press us down.
The cross has the final word. Grace speaks louder than our guilt!
Reflection
1. Are there areas in your life where you still feel condemned, even though you’re in Christ?
2. What does it look like to walk in the freedom the Spirit offers you today?
3. What truth from this passage do you need to hold onto when you’re tempted to listen to shame or condemnation?
Prayer
Thank God that in Christ you are no longer condemned. Ask the Spirit to help you walk in freedom and resist the lies of shame. Bring any lingering guilt to Jesus and thank Him for doing what the law could never do—setting you free by His sacrifice.
