September 15: The Voice of the Shepherd
Scripture
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”
—John 10:27–30 (NLT)
In the middle of a tense and divided crowd, Jesus makes one of the most comforting statements in all of Scripture. He describes the relationship between Himself and His followers as that of a shepherd and his sheep. It’s a relationship built on recognition and trust: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” This isn’t some distant, stale religion; it’s a deep, personal connection where we are known by name and led by a voice we trust.
The key to this relationship is listening. Yet we live in a world filled with many competing voices. There’s the voice of culture, the voice of fear, ambition, and our own insecurity. So, how do we tune our ears to the Shepherd? We hear Him in the timeless truth of His Word. We hear Him in the quiet whispers of His Spirit when we make space for prayer and solitude. The real question is not whether the Shepherd is speaking, but whether we are training our hearts to listen above all the noise.
And what is the result of this relationship? Jesus promises, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me.” Think of that image: we are held securely in the hand of the Good Shepherd. But He doesn’t stop there. He adds that the Father, who is “more powerful than anyone else,” has also given us to Him, and “No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.”
How can Jesus make such a bold promise? He settles it with these words: “The Father and I are one.” Your security doesn’t rest on your ability to hold on to Him but on His power to hold on to you. The hands that shaped the universe are the same hands that carry you now. Nothing is stronger than His grip, and nothing can separate you from His love.
So take heart, lift your head, and rest in the care of the Good Shepherd. He knows you, He loves you, and He will never let you go.
Reflection
1. How do you recognize the difference between Jesus’ voice and all the other voices competing for your attention?
2. When was the last time you intentionally set aside space to pray and listen for the Shepherd’s voice?
3. How would you live differently today if you were fully convinced that nothing and no one could ever separate you from the Father’s love?
Prayer
Ask Jesus to help you tune your heart to His voice above all others. Pray for the courage to follow wherever He leads and for the peace that comes from knowing your life is held securely in His hands.
