February 18: The Weight Of Anxiety

Scripture
“Anxiety weighs down the heart,
but a kind word cheers it up.
The righteous choose their friends carefully,
but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
Proverbs 12:25–26 (NIV)

Anxiety has weight to it. Solomon says it “weighs down the heart,” and most of us know exactly what that feels like. A heaviness in the chest. A restless mind. A constant hum of worry beneath the surface. Jesus tells us not to worry. Paul echoes that command in Philippians, urging us to bring our requests to God and receive His peace. And yet, this remains a battle. Some days we win. Some days it feels like anxiety wins.

Solomon gives us a simple but powerful remedy: a kind word. Not a theological lecture. Not a quick fix. Just a kind word. Encouragement has the power to lift a burdened heart. God often brings His peace through people. A timely text. A thoughtful conversation. A reminder of truth spoken gently. Kindness is not small in the Kingdom. It can pull someone back from the edge of despair.

Then Solomon connects anxiety with relationships. “The righteous choose their friends carefully.” The people we surround ourselves with matter deeply. They can either amplify our fears or anchor us in faith. They can lead us toward wisdom or quietly pull us away from it. We are often shaped by the voices we allow closest to our hearts.

This doesn’t mean we withdraw from those who are far from God. Jesus certainly did not. But it does mean we are intentional about who has influence in our lives. Our closest companions should be those who sharpen us, speak life over us, and encourage us in our walk with the Lord. When anxiety weighs heavy, the right voices can remind us of who holds tomorrow.

May we be people who bring that timely word to others and may kindness be what we known for.

Reflection
1. When anxiety weighs on your heart, where do you tend to turn first for relief or reassurance?

2. Who in your life consistently speaks kind, faith-filled words that lift your heart toward God?

3. Are you being that kind of friend to someone else who may be carrying a hidden burden?

Prayer
Bring your anxieties honestly before the Lord and ask Him to replace worry with His peace. Pray for discernment in your friendships, that your closest relationships would strengthen your faith. Ask God to use your words this week to cheer and steady someone whose heart feels weighed down.
